The best park for a skate competition places a big demand on the terrain. Concrete bowls are essential, but for today's moves, you also need modern coping and spine/hip/corner configurations. Only marseille has all these elements. The configuration of the spined capsule with it's much photographed hip, and the superb multi-depth clover plus a mach 5 surface means you can carve, get air and go tech. it's the ultimate terrain for a skate competition.
The skatepark at the Prado in Marseille, France is the brainchild of Jean Pierre Colinet. In 1989 Jean Pierre combined his talents as a skateboarder and surfer with his studies in architecture. The design of Marseille was drawn from his diverse skating experience gathered from ditches in the countryside outside Marseille, the skatepark at Roche Orient and all of the best ideas that he had skated or seen. Jean Pierre collected ideas and applied his knowledge of architecture. Then he went knocking on doors to try and persuade someone to finance a project.
In 1989 skating was into it's second wave so when Jean Pierre contacted The Department for Green Spaces they were receptive to his ideas. This first project led to the construction of a keyhole bowl at Valmante. The success of this venture led the authorities to ask him if he would care to design a larger park in a prime beach location. Marseille was born.
