THE QUIKSILVER CROSSING

A 12-month expedition, criss-crossing the Equator to expand the knowledge of the unique islands and fragile coral reefs of our planet.

In March 1999, Quiksilver announced that they had chartered the surf exploration vessel, MV Indies Trader, for a 12-month voyage criss-crossing the Equator around the globe. The project is known as the Quiksilver Crossing.

Besides surfing, the expedition has been carrying out work for Reef Check, a global coral reef monitoring and management program officially approved by the United Nations and supported by both UNESCO/IOC and UNEP.

Since leaving Cairns, North Queensland, Australia in March, the Indies Trader has travelled 10,320 nautical miles across the South Pacific.

Sadly the results from The Crossing so far have confirmed that even the remote reefs have been affected by overfishing, hence the great need for community-based management of coral reefs.

"The good news is that pollution is a relatively minor problem in most of these areas, and the reef corals themselves are generally in good condition."
