Hi All:
Not sure if this is where I should post this, but I am a traveller who is leaving from Christchurch on 08 Feb, and I have an HV 7'2" with a leash to sell. It is a good board, some minor dings (all repaired, glassed in fins. I have 450 into it, so I would like to get 400 for it. If you are interested, or if I should be posting this elsewhere, please lemme know! I am in Abel Tasman at the moment, and will be moving South to Hoki this week. Have a great day, your country is great, and your surfing is equal!

1226
To the surfing tribe.
First of all let me start by introducing myself. I'm a surfer, living
in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, my business partner is a woman called Pia Zain.
It's a short window for surf here in Malaysia, and we came back from a
New Years trip to the east coast with one thing on our minds....the
tsunami.
We decided to see what we could do in a practical manner, and it's just
kind of snowballed from there.
After a little research on the web, we came up with a very specific
website (http://www.mentawai.com/aceh.html), and decided that direct
action was the best approach, so we picked up the phone and called Rick
Cameron.
We spoke to an impassioned man, a man surrounded by not just devastation
and disaster, but by frustration as well.
Rick has spent the last 20 years running surf charters out of islands of
the Mentawais, Banyak, Nias and Simuelue.
He is an Australian by birth, and speaks the local language, but more
importantly understands the region with a deep and personal love for
these people who are the care takers of the world famous breaks we all
love as surfers.
To date, whilst the mainland of Aceh has received direct help, there has
been NO help or aid getting through to the outer islands of Sumatra.
Im writing this to you 12 days after the tsunami first hit, and this was
the epicenter of the quake which caused the tsunami, and the first to
be hit by it.......the last to be given any help.
On first speaking to Rick, we soon started talking about who he wanted
Pia and myself to contact, and top of his list was getting this message
out to the surfing world.
This then naturally led me to Alex Dick-Read, editor of The Surfers Path,
to which I subscribe, who suggested to me to post a message on as many
notice boards as possible, this one included. Alex himself
has spoken to Rick directly.
Surfers Path have previously written an article in a back issue, all
about Rick and his experiences in the islands.
Pia and myself are in direct contact with Rick day by day, and are doing
all we can to aid him in his efforts.
He needs immediate help on all sorts of levels, and there is a wish list
of practical emergency aid, all of which are posted on his website.
Right now, he knows of a boat plane in Jakarta, that can be with him
within the next couple of days, but is as yet not on the website, as he
is waiting for the costs before we post it on there.
I have just finished on the phone with Rick this morning, and he is
expressing the need for emotional as well as humanitarian aid.
Whilst the actual death toll in the area is lower than maybe expected,
which Rick puts down to the collective awareness of the communities that
have been dessimated, they have suffered something called "ganguan jiwa".
This literally translated means a loss of spirit. Spirit that these
people live their daily lives by, and understand to be their way of life.
At the moment Rick is concentrating purely on assessing the area of
devastation and getting immediate aid to those who need it.
His partner Jane Liddon, is currently on a boat, with medical aid, just
attempting to give some kind of perspective on the catastrophe, and
some kind of numbers of people affected.
I could carry on telling you of the day to day happenings, since we have
linked up with Rick, but quite frankly, each one is more incredible
than the next, and this message would be pages long. I would rather just
urge you to please take a look at the website.
Rick is especially keen to raise awareness within the surf community,
but as of this morning said that just to let communities know that the
outside world is thinking of them, and there are efforts being made to
assist them, will be invaluable.
Please, we are not necessarily asking for direct monetary help, but help
in raising the awareness of their plight amongst the surfing tribe.
In these days of big wave surfing, where teams are ready to be deployed
at a moments notice around the world to catch the big swells, then there
is hope that this ground swell in response to a tsunami, can, with your
help at ANY level, however small it may seem, start an equal and
opposite wave that will help Rick in his efforts.
Already Rick is talking about long term aid structure as well as
immediate relief, and plans are already in action to create a specific
relief model for the indigenous people of the area.
Humanity has an opportunity here to make amends, and the aloha spirit
that all of us as surfers have, needs to be a part of that.
Just to raise that awareness within the surfing tribe will, in itself be
a force of power of good to be reckoned with.
I please urge you, to, in its most simplistic form, of picking up the
phone and telling a like minded friend about this, help us raise that
awareness.
ANY other help is obviously greatly appreciated.
These indigenous peoples, whose lives have depended for so many
generations on the sea, are quite simply in shock.
He needs practical hands on help from people with medical experience,
who can live in these harsh environments, and can also deal with the
emotional level of what they will encounter.
At this point I find myself already rambling, and if I carry on, I know
this will eventually become the longest message you have ever read, so
I would just like to leave you with an extract form a conversation
between Pia and Rick within the last 48 hours:
"Up till 2 weeks ago the wrecked villages we are helping were places
that our surfing guests liked to visit. Our arrival was always announced
by a circle of raucous happy kids. The total lack of fences, gates,
locks and even doors always impressed our well heeled clients.
What left a lasting impression was the atmosphere of independence and
tranquility........
.......a kind of balance that our frantic lives never seem to quite
achieve.
All that has gone.
The villagers dont understand what has happened to their world. Our crew
keep telling us that the people they meet are deeply afraid of the
ocean that has sustained them for generations. Captain Pili said the
people are suffering from "ganguan jiwa" .... a disturbance of the soul.....
I could tell that Pili was on the point of tears despite the distortion
on the sat phone."
Because I will be posting this message on so many different notice boards I
do not want to include Ricks direct contact details and email with this
message, because he is focusing his energy on the direct and practical needs
of the relief effort.
HOWEVER,YOU CAN ACCESS THIS INFORMATION ON THE WEB PAGE, AND WE URGE YOU TO
CONTACT HIM ONLY IF YOU HAVE PRACTICAL IMMEDIATE SUPPORT OR AID THAT WILL
ASSIST HIM
If you would like to send messages of support, please send them to
aloha1226@hotmail.com
Myself and Pia will be checking this email constantly and forwarding messages
onto Rick.
Please feel free to use this email to contact us as well if you can not get
through to Rick. We do not need to overwhelm him and impede his efforts.
This message is not under an kind of copyright laws, please feel free to use
it as you wish, copy and paste it, reproduce it.
Mahalo and aloha
