2006 Nelscott Reef Tow-in Classic

Presented by Liquid Militia
Nelscott Reef, Lincln City, Or.
1 Octoer - 31 December 2006

Nelscott Reef Tow-in Classic goes on to STANDBY

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 December, 2006 : - - Lincoln City, OR - The contest status for the 2006 Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic, presented by Liquid Militia and the Nelscott Reef Surf Shop, has been changed to Yellow today. A yellow status means there is a potential swell forecast that is being monitored for contestable conditions. All competitors have been notified of the status change.

The current forecast models show a significant swell event for the Oregon Coast to begin on Thursday, December 8th and continue through at least Monday December 11. As of today's models, the swell should be a minimum of 18' with a potential maximum over 25'. This should produce some very large waves at the reef in Lincoln City, OR.

"The fact that this swell has such a long window of opportunity gives us the ability to choose the right day for the contest. We just need to winds to cooperate, and we will have an amazing day of huge surf", said contest organizer, John Forse. The Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic is more than half way through its holding period of October 1 through December 31st. Coincidentally, the 2005 contest was held on December 11th of last year in some of the best conditions ever seen in a big wave contest.

Although the reef sits about 1/2 mile off the beach, it can be easily seen from shore. A modest pair of binoculars will get you right into the action. Some of our sponsors are going to make watching the contest a little more enjoyable this year. The Kernville Steakhouse, will be serving their award winning clam chowder, as well as other great homemade food. "We couldn't be happier about supporting this years event. After handing out the chowder to a select few last year, we have seen an influx of surfers come in to the restaurant when they come to town, and we love it", said Jason Miller, head chef for the Kernville Restaurant.

Behemoth has also partnered with Drop In Media, the premier mobile application and mobile marketing solution provider, to provide mobile alerts. Alerts will be sent to mobile phones with contest status updates leading up to the contest. During the event, updates will be sent with heat results and links to photos. Members will also be able to text their comments back to Behemoth before and during the contest. Sign up for the alerts is available at www.actionsportsnw.com and www.nelscottreef.com. For contest updates and information please visit www.nelscottreef.com.

The Chinook Winds Casino will be hosting the after party and award ceremony. Food will be served and drinks available at the no host bar. Special rate rooms are also available - please contact the casino at 541-996-5825, and mention the Nelscott Contest.

2006 Nelscott Reef Tow-in Classic Contest details

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 December, 2006 : - - The annual Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic, presented by Liquid Militia and the Nelscott Reef Surf Shop, now in its second year, has a waiting period from October 1, 2006 through December 31, 2006 and will be held at Nelscott Reef, in Lincoln City, OR.

Behemoth, LLC, who puts on the contest, says all plans are in place for an excellent contest this year.  “We have an amazing list of talent lined up for this event”, says Nelscott pioneer John Forse.  “We had almost perfect conditions last year, so the only thing we are looking for to top 2005 is a bigger swell - we are hoping for 40’ or better”.

Nelscott Reef organizers are again adopting a traffic light system for the 2006 contest.  A red light means there is no chance of the contest in the near future. The light will change to yellow when a forecasted swell and weather conditions looks favorable.  If the conditions continue to look good, the light will be switched to green.

This means that competitors have 48 hours to get to Oregon for the contest. Traffic light status can be tracked at nelscottreef.com and actionsportsnw.com.

The success of last year’s contest has generated a lot of interest in Oregon’s only professional surfing contest. Several key partners have come aboard insuring this years event will be better than 2005.  Liquid Militia, a presenting sponsor, is a key partner and brings a lot of experience and expertise to the team.  The Nelscott Reef Surf Shop, also a presenting sponsor, will be opening in conjunction with this year’s contest.

Behemoth, LLC has partnered with Shawn Alladio and her K38 Water Rescue group to provide a dedicated safety and rescue team.  This year also gets endorsements from the Oregon Sports Authority and the WCTSA (West Coast Tow Surfing Association).

Also a major sponsor, the Chinook Winds Casino will be hosting the award ceremony the night of the contest.  This event is open to the public and will be $25 at the door.  There will be food, live music, a no host bar, and giveaways.  Rooms are available during the contest at a special rate - just let them know you are there for the Nelscott Contest.

The beginning of the waiting period also marks the launch of website redesigns for Nelscottreef.com and Actionsportsnw.com. Both sites will have web cam coverage, up to the minute information, traffic light status and other event information.  Videos of last year’s event are available through Nelscottreef.com.

The Nelscott Reef Tow in Classic is the only professional tow in contest on the North American Continent and one of only 2 professional tow in contests in the world.  Oregon is not known in the surfing community as a destination for quality waves.  The water ranges from the mid 40’s to upper 50’s year round and is usually plagued with high winds, pelting rain and hungry Great White Sharks.

A small window in the fall allows large swells generated from the first winter Pacific storms to reach the Oregon Coast while a dominant high pressure system remains over the Pacific Northwest.  A few days a year, Nelscott Reef plays host to huge perfect waves.

Despite being visible from the well populated coastal town of Lincoln City, the reef wasn’t successfully ridden on a surfboard until 2003, when local, John Forse, convinced Peter Mel and Adam Replogle to come to Oregon and check out the wave - they surfed near perfect 30-40’ foot waves all day.  Two years later, Behemoth, LLC put on the first Annual Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic held in 20-30’+ waves.  The event was won by Zack and Jake Wormhoudt from Santa Cruz.

“We have put a lot of time into making sure the event runs smoothly and safely.  Nelscott Reef is one of the best big wave venues in the world and we have the best big wave talent lined up.  All the work has been done, now we have to sit back and wait for mother nature to send a big swell our way” said Behemoth, LLC partner, Jim Kusz.  “The 3 month window allows us to be patient and hold the contest in the best conditions possible”.
