Rip Curl Cup Padang-Padang Trials could go with next swell

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 June, 2014 - Bali-Indonesia:  With a massive 10-12 foot (3 meter) swell predicted to slam into the Bukit Peninsula of Bali towards the end of next week, Rip Curl has put the 24 local trialists on alert for a possible green light on either June 19 or 20th, just a few days after the start of the Trials waiting period that runs from June 14th to 30th.

Depending upon the conditions, the 2014 Rip Curl Cup trialists will battle it out at either Padang-Padang or Uluwatu in hopes of getting one of the two open slots in the Rip Curl Cup main event; One goes to the Trials winner and the other to the highest placing Bukit local (who must be from the Pecatu Banjar).

Trialists this year include Uluwatu’s Made Lana, 2008 trials winner Komang “Gogo” Sujaya, 2010 Indonesian Surfing Champion Putra Hermawan, Mustofa Jeksen, Marlon Gerber, Tipi Jabrik, and more.

The waiting period for the 11th annual Rip Curl Cup Padang-Padang, long known as the Ultimate Tuberiding Contest and Bali’s longest running professional surfing contest, will begin on July 5th and end on August 17th, giving Huey a full six weeks to deliver the exacting conditions that will see the 24 of the finest international and local tubemasters competing in the spitting green barrels of the Balinese Pipeline.

"The Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang is the highlight event of the year for us providing an amazing opportunity to be able to showcase the best Indonesian surfers against some of the world’s most renowned and talented tube riders in pumping conditions at Padang-Padang.

With the addition of a live webcast for the 2nd year running, surf fans from all corners of the globe will have the chance to witness the insane level of world class surfing that is coming out of Indonesia right now," says Rip Curl’s SE Asia Marketing Manager James Hendy.

In a departure from the previous year’s format, this year’s Rip Curl Cup will see 24 rather than 32 competitors: 12 international icons and 12 of Indonesia’s finest barrel masters in man-on man heats. “Having just two surfers in the water in each heat allows them to really make the most out of the chance to be out at Padang-Padang in a virtually empty lineup…an absolute dream come true,” added Hendy.

With an exciting lineup of tuberiding specialist invitees including Jamie O’Brian, Chris Ward, Kekoa Bacalso, Bruno Santos, last year’s runner up Jacob Willcox, Rizal Tanjung, Garut Widiarta, and last year’s winner Mega Semadhi taking on Bali’s most iconic barrel, stoked surf fans will be frothing to get on-line and view all the action when the green light calls the competitors into action, as the 2014 Rip Curl Cup will be broadcast globally at live.ripcurl.com, and it can be viewed on smartphones with the Rip Curl Live Events App.

The 24 competitors will be competing not only for their share of the $10,000 prize purse but also for “The Cup”.  The local Balinese artists at MOD Jewelry, who have also made Association of Surfing Professionals championship rings and awards in the past, designed this coveted trophy.

Hand-carved from teak wood and inlayed with silver, the bowl is carved into the shape of a flower and is mounted above a piece of wood made to look like a craggy chunk of the Padang-Padang reef. Each year the cup is filled with Bintang beer and the winner must skull it all down on the victory podium.  That is truly the Grand Prize of the event!

And in the tradition of all great sporting prizes, the winner’s name is permanently inscribed on the perpetual trophy that lives at Rip Curl HQ in Bali for all to see. Each winner does receive his own version of the trophy to take home and place on his trophy shelf as well.

Make sure to attend the time-honored Rip Curl Cup Opening Ceremony on July 5th at Padang-Padang Beach, which welcomes the start of the waiting period with a press conference, the introduction of all the competitors and a chance to meet them, as well as the traditional and unique Balinese Kecak Dance.

Additionally within the waiting period on August 8th is a festive Rip Curl Cup Masked Ball at the Rip Curl HQ on Sunset Road, which will give everyone a chance to let off some steam, either in celebration of an already concluded Rip Curl Cup or to give a shout out to Huey in hopes of calling up that perfect Padang-Padang swell.
