GROMSEARCH COMPETITION KICKS OFF AT DURANBAH
The Rip Curl Gromsearch Series proved just how flexible it is today by relocating Day 1 of competition from its Burleigh Heads meeting place at 6.30am this morning to the nearby break of Duranbah, NSW. Event #3 of the five-stop National Series is running until Friday and boasts over 250 of Australias hottest junior surfers.
The 16 & Under Boys the Series premier division hit the water first this morning, separated into 16 three-man heats, all running for 20 minutes each. Clean 3ft waves were on offer at Duranbah throughout the first half of the day, allowing Gromsearchs most experienced grommets to go to battle in fair conditions. Rip Curl surfer and Gromsearch Event #1 winner Drew Montgomery (Long Reef, NSW) was one of the standout surfers of the morning, claiming a great two-wave combined heat score of 17.8 in his easy Heat 7 defeat of Michael Levitt (Palm Beach, Qld) and Lloyd Bowen (Gerroa, NSW).
It was kinda small, but still fun, said Montgomery after his heat win. There are a couple of clean ones coming through, but you really had to wait for the set waves - if you didnt get the set waves it was hard to get scores. Ive been surfing pretty well lately and Im hoping to keep it going this week.
Dean Lezzi (Peregian, Qld) looked destined to overshadow Montgomery when he landed a 9.77 on the first wave of Heat 8, but the youngster went missing after that and couldnt grab a worthy second wave. Chippa Wilson (Cabarita Beach, NSW) and Kiel Bigeni (Port Macquarie, NSW) went on to grab two decent scores each and leave a helpless Lezzi in last place. Heath Joske (Nambucca Heads, NSW) kept the action cranking in Heat 14, scoring an impressive 9.6 on his first wave and winning his heat on 18.43 points - the highest two-wave combined 16 & Under Boys heat score of the day.
The 16 & Under Girls got under way after lunch with in form Rip Curl team member Stephanie Gilmore (Kingscliffe, NSW) impressing early in Heat 1. Gilmore posted a 9.77 and a 9.0 in her heat against Angela Keighran (Mullaway, NSW), Ashleigh Smith (Cabarita, NSW) and Holly Matthewson (Whale Beach, NSW), giving her a two-wave combined score of 18.77, the best of the day.
Today was really good, replied Gilmore when asked about Day 1 competition. The waves got a bit fatter as the day went on because the tide got higher, but my heat was pretty consistent and I was lucky to pull off some nine-point set waves. Dbah is probably one of my favourite waves, so it was good to surf here today.
The Rip Curl Gromsearch Series offers Australias hottest junior surfers much more than your average surf contest. It features a unique double-chance format, where each competitor gets to surf at least twice before being eliminated, includes spectator competitions and Rip Curl will be holding a host of on-the-beach giveaways throughout the week,
