2nd Corona Extra Pro event of season hits Puerto Rico

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 September, 2009 : - - The second Corona Extra Pro Surfing event for the 2009 season will take place October 3 & 4, at Middles Beach, near Isabela town. The Middles event will feature $15,000 in prize money, with $10,000 going to the Men and $5,000 for the Women.

Coppertone Sunscreen Company will be awarding a $500 prize for “Best Performance” to a surfer in both the Mens and Womens divisions. Look for Middles to deliver the goods, as this beach not only offers up consistent surf, but its beautiful sand lined shore is a perfect place to watch the ripping or simply work on your tan.

A schedule of over 40 men and 20 women is expected for the event, which always draws a strong field to the popular reef break. “In 2008 we had overhead barrels at Middles for the Final on Sunday”, said organizer Werner Vega. “We hope to have conditions like that again this year.”

The first event of 2009 was held February 28 and March 1 at Domes, in Rincon. It was won by Brian Toth and visiting mainland surfer, Karina Petroni, of Atlantic Beach, Florida.

The Middles event will be the 16th edition of the APSPR Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit, which has established itself as the accepted sanctioning body for pro surfing in Puerto Rico. APSPR hold two or three events per season and crowns a champion based on their accumulated points. The defending APSPR champions from 2008 are Carlos Cabrero, of San Juan, and Anastasia Ashley, from California. Both Cabrero and Ashley are expected to compete at Middles.

All the APSPR pro surfers from the island are seeded into the event based on their cumulative ranking. This year organizers are also granting seeds to four mainland surfers, based on their placing in the New Smyrna Beach, Florida Pro, which took place in April. “They gave seeds to four of our surfers from Domes,” explained Vega, “So we are returning the favor.”

“We know that Puerto Rico is a favorite destination for the mainland surfers in the spring and winter months, so we have established an exchange program with the top finishers from the East Coast, to encourage them to come to Middles,”

The event will feature computer scoring by Beach Byte, as well as “Heats on Demand”. With Corona as the title sponsor the fun doesn’t end when the sun goes down. Entertainment will be first rate, Corona Extra and Corona Light will be hosting happy hours, live music, dj's and heats on demand video from the day’s competition that will highlight the nightlife  at several locations.

Make sure to catch the innovative “Heats on Demand” action on apspr.net. for great entertainment and feedback. At the completion of each day of surf, you’ll have access to every scoring ride of the event, of every heat.  You can scan the draw, and select which heat you would like to view.  Each scoring ride will be shown, along with the points earned for that wave.

In addition to Corona Extra and Corona Light, the other sponsors of the Middles event will be: Alfa Rock, WAPA, Primera Hora, Direct TV, Jose Cuervo, Right Guard, Surfers Village, Hang Loose Surf Shop, Werner Vega Surfboards and Coppertone.

Contestants wishing to enter can do so through apspr.net or visit Hang Loose Surf Shop, Playa Jobos, Puerto Rico. Entries should be paid by Sept. 23. After Sept. 23 a late entry fee will be charged. Last day to receive entries is Sept 26.
