32 WORLD SURFING LEGENDS TO COMPETE AT THE
QUIKSILVER MASTERS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
AUGUST 30TH ESEPTEMBER 8TH, 2001, IRELAND
Quiksilver, the worlds largest board surfwear company, is proud to announce the arrival of the most prestigious surf event: The Masters World Surfing Championship, to take place in Ireland between August 30th and September 8th, 2001. The Masters has previously been held at the surfing Meccas of Fiji, Hawaii and Southern France and will now hit the rugged shoreline at Bundoran, Ireland.
This event will see the largest field of world champions ever competing in a surfing contest. Of the incredibly strong international field of 32, selected from career ratings, half are world champions with representatives from USA, Hawaii, Australia, South Africa and the UK. This creates an impressive competitor list in the two-category event, based on age groups.
In the Masters (over 35) section, the likes of Tom Carroll (Double World Champion) will battle against current ASP WCT member and 1999 World Champion, Mark Occhilupo and Britains very own world champion of 1989, Martin Potter. They will be challenging an enormously proud champion from last years competition at Lafitenia, France, where Gary Elkerton clinched his first world honour after finishing runner-up three times on the WCT.
The second category, the Grand Masters (over 44) section, sees true surf legends like Jeff Hakman, the 1965 Duke Kahanomoku World Champion and founder of Quiksilver compete against Rabbit Bartholomew, ASP President and 1978 World Champion and defending Grand Masters champion, Michael Ho from Hawaii.
