Queensland’s Top Junior Surfers Apply Heat At North Stradbroke!

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 July, 2008 : - - The battle continued for prestigious state surfing titles today with the second leg of the Quiksilver Queensland State Junior Titles kicking off on North Stradbroke Island.

Reaping the rewards of the clean 2-3ft (1-metre) beach break waves on offer at Main Beach, Queensland’s top junior surfers aged 17 years and under went toe-to-toe in the race for state crowns, plus all-important selection in the Queensland team to contest the Quiksilver Australian Grommet Titles in Western Australia in December.

Day one of competition saw semi-finalists in both the U/18 and U/16 age boy's divisions confirmed following the completion of the opening two rounds of surfing action.  Island favourite Tim MacDonald is the form surfer through to final eight of the U/18 boys after cruising to victory in both his round one and two heats.

The 16-year-old ace made his intentions clear from the opening siren, backhand blasting his way past Sunshine Coast’s Jayson Homan (Noosa) and Lance Pirie (Mermaid Beach) of the Gold Coast in his first heat.

MacDonald was in a league of his own netting an excellent scoring 8.00 on his opening ride before backing it up with a 6.50 to finish with a two-wave combined total of a 14.50. Homan finishing in second on 8.90 points with Pirie in third on 8.65.

“It was great to start my campaign off with a win,” said MacDonald.  “I surf Main pretty much everyday, so I feel pretty confident out there."  The lanky natural foot continued to apply the heat in his round two heat bagging a 15.60 scoring combination to storm through to the semifinals.

MacDonald has impressed since bursting onto the junior surfing scene, chalking up numerous top placed finishes in prestigious tournaments over the past year and is confident of seizing the upper hand against his mainland foes.

“I’m feeling great, my boards are going good and I’m going all out for the win,” he said. “Hopefully I can do it in front of all my friends and family.” But Gold Coast young gun James Woods (Coolangatta) stands in his way of a maiden state crown. The former U/16 state champion and U/18 ratings leader advanced behind a red-hot Brad Homan (Noosa) through to semi-final contention.

Joining them in the U/18 semifinals included Jack Miliken (North Stradbroke Island), Thomas Woods (Coolangatta), Matt Johnson (Maroochydore), Jaiden Elgey (Palm Beach) and Zack Starett (Bokarina). Failing to progress today included the talented Coolangatta trio of Ice Ryan, Jack Freestone and Mitch Duggan.

Competition is expected to continue tomorrow with finals wrapping up around 12 noon. Please call the Surfing Queensland event hotline (07) 3030 6288 after 6.30am for an event location.

Title winners will join a who’s who of the Queensland surfing scene that have netted state junior titles including reigning world champion Mick Fanning (Coolangatta), world no.2 Joel Parkinson (Coolangatta), world no.3 Bede Durbidge (Currumbin) and world tour competitor Dean Morrison (Coolangatta).
