'The Africa Project' is a documentary film about surfing in Africa'
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 June, 2012 : - - For more than two years, filmmaker Jason Hearn scoured the African continent to document some of South Africa's top surfers taking on the perfect waves. This labour of love culminated in 'The Africa Project', a film that showcases some of the incredible surfers, waves, people, cultures and diversity that the African continent has to offer.
It's a visually appealing documentary that is sure to arouse the interest of surfers and adventure lovers alike, with a group of intrepid travellers having explored Africa's exotic coastline in often testing conditions to find the ideal surf spots. 'The Africa Project' was previewed on the popular lifestyle TV show Top Billing on SABC 3 and premiered in South Africa at the end of last year.
Having been warmly received, the film will be shown on a big screen on Thursday, July 5 at 5pm at the Mr Price Pro Ballito's 'Surf Film Night' at Willard Beach. On the same night there will be live music and a night market, which forms part of the Mr Price Pro Ballito's action packed beach festival featuring beach entertainment, extreme sports, dedicated children's programs and a lifestyle and retail area that provides plenty of daytime fun.
The prestigious ASP PRIME Mr Price Pro Ballito runs from July 2-8, featuring 96 surfers from 19 different countries and offers R2.2 million in prize money. Running concurrently, the beach festival offers free concerts at Salt Rock (July 6 and 7), with a host of South Africa's leading bands in the best-ever line-up making the Mr Price Pro Ballito the biggest surf, beach and lifestyle event on the African continent.
And there is no doubt that the broadcasting of 'The Africa Project', which is a truly 'Proudly South African' production, will only add to the allure of the event. Dedicated filmmaker, Hearn, hails from Cape Town, while the film features top South African surfers such as Jordy Smith, David Weare, Royden Bryson, Dan Redman and big wave legend Twiggy Baker, as well as the new generation of emerging talents.
Weare, a former ASP World Championship Tour competitor, provided his rave review of 'The Africa Project', which went to locations like Morocco, Senegal, Namibia, Reunion, Madagascar and all along the South African coastline.
"It provides a fantastic display of the South African and African coastline," Weare said. "Being featured in the film was an amazing experience; I was involved in some of the filming in Reunion, Namibia and a bit in South Africa. The film really showcases the waves on offer and some really good surfers. It's an incredible documentary that shows the talent, waves and different people of South Africa and Africa."
Along with the likes of Smith and Bryson, Weare will be competing in the upcoming Mr Price Pro Ballito, which he said he was really looking forward to. "I'm really excited to take part in this year's event and I'm hoping there will be some really good waves, as there usually are." The Mr Price Pro Ballito takes to the waves on July 2-8 and precedes the six star rated ASP Billabong Pro JBay from July 10-15.
