CORY LOPEZ WINS HONDA ELEMENT US OPEN OF SURFING, PRESENTED BY O´NEILL;
READY FOR X GAMES NEXT WEEKEND...
For the second time in four years a Lopez brother has won the US OPEN OF SURFING. Cory´s older brother Shea, accomplished this in 1999 and to this day, they are the only brother duo to ever boast this feat. This phenomena is even more intriguing when coupled with the fact that the two Lopez brothers grew-up on the wave starved Gulf Coast of Indian Rocks Beach, Florida.
The HONDA ELEMENT US OPEN OF SURFING - PRESENTED BY O´NEILL - a 6 Star World Qualifying event (WQS) is part of the PHILIPS FUSION action sports extravaganza and the FOSTER´S PRO SURFING TOUR. It is the first of three major surfing events to make a run through southern California this summer, which includes the first ever X GAMES SURFING COMPETITION, next weekend (August 9th, 2003 - Huntington Beach Pier, CA) and THE BOOST MOBILE PRO - PRESENTED BY QUIKSILVER - A Grade 1 World Championship Event (WCT) on the ASP World Tour (September 4-13, 2003 - Lower Trestles, CA). Since 1994, The US OPEN OF SURFING has been considered by many to be the largest, most prestigious professional surfing tournament in the United States. Cory won this year´s event in solid 6-8´ foot waves, before a crowd of 85,000 + screaming surf fans. The Lopez family now has two of these trophies to grace their mantle.
Top ranked ASP/WCT surfers Cory Lopez and elder brother Shea will be headlining next weekend along with 6x World Champion Kelly Slater and CJ & Damien Hobgood as they represent the U.S. East Coast in the X GAMES.
2003 US OPEN OF SURFING CHAMPION CORY LOPEZ comments on surfing being included in the X GAMES for the first time and his opportunity to participate...
"I think it´s going to be great, the X-GAMES did so much for SKATEBOARDING and BMX, I think it´s going to be a step in the right direction as far as helping further our sport. It´s exciting and I´m looking forward to it, and hope we´ll get good waves so we can put on a good show. SURFING´S an entertaining sport - it´s fun to watch and challenging to participate in."
