Event draws near in the iconic scenery of Rincon Puerto Rico...

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 March, 2011 : - - The APSPR (Asociacion de Profesional Surfers de Puerto Rico) announced that entries for the $15,000 Corona Extra Pro at Domes Beach in Rincon should be received by Wednesday, March 2.  The prestigious event will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13 at the iconic surf break of Domes Beach, in the city of Rincon on the Northwest corner of Puerto Rico’s wave-rich coast.

Entry fee for the event is $81.00 for the open men's and $65.00 for the open women's. “After Wednesday March 2nd, a late entry fee of $35 will be charged, until entries finally close on Saturday March 5th”, announced Viviannee Vega., APSPR Operations Manager.

This wil be the 19 th edition of the Corona Extra Pro Surf Series since it began as the sanctioning body of Pro surfing in Puerto Rico in 2001. As the second event on the current APSPR title race, the Domes event will carry one third of the point value in the race for the crown of Corona Extra Pro Surf Champions for the both the Men and Women competitors.

The purse for the Men is $10,000 with a $5,000 payout for the Women. In addition, Coppertone Skincare will reward it’s prestigious $500 prize for “Best Performance” to one male and one female surfer each. Entries have been filling up fast with many surfers from the Mainland U.S. making an annual pilgrimage to escape their chilly waters and compete at Domes. Entries have already been accepted from most of the East Coast, including New Jersey, Maryland, North Carolina and Florida.

The local Puerto Rican pros, who revere the APSPR as their National Pro Championship, are filling the ranks in pursuit of the important points. Current ratings leader, Brian Toth, 25, of Isabela and Leslie Bursian, 24, of San Juan will be top seeds, after finishing first and second at the last event, at Middles last November. On the Women’s side, Liselie Gonzales leads the rankings following her victory at Middles.

Toth is already a 2 times Corona Circuit Champion and the veteran former Champion Juan Ashton, 41, of San Juan has also entered. Darren Mushett, 26, of Rincon is a previous event winner who is always a threat at Domes, which is his local break.

“This is shaping up as one of our best fields of competitors ever”, said Werner Vega, Executive Director of APSPR. “In addition, the town of Rincon always takes on a festive atmosphere during the Domes event. Corona once again has planned nighttime entertainment at several locations, so that the party never stops when the sun goes down at Domes”. In recent years, the small resort town has seen huge traffic jams as thousands of surfing fans drive out from San Juan and the rest of the Island to enjoy the “round the clock” action.
