Asian Surfing Championships to sanction Phillippines "locals only" comp
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 March, 2015 - Kuta, Bali - The Asian Surfing Championships has announced the addition of the Van’s Cloud 9 Masters to the 2015 ASC tour calendar.
The event is set kick off on April 27th at Siargao Island, home of the Philippines and arguably SE Asia’s most perfect barreling right hander, and finish on May 1st. A total prize purse of Php 100,000 (over USD $2,000) up for grabs between the Men’s Open, Women’s Open, and Junior Divisions as well as ASC tour championship points in all three divisions.
After sanctioning the Siargao Men’s and Siargao Women’s International Surfing Cups since 2012, the ASC is now honored to be sanctioning this previously “locals only” surfing competition, open exclusively to ASC members and Philippine nationals.
The first Cloud 9 Masters was held in May of 2007 as the realization of Cloud 9 locals Manuel “Wilmar” Melindo, Rodolfo “Osot” Alcala, and Ronald “Rasta” Sumalinog’s dream to have a local’s contest they could call their very own. With a bit of support from the local government, the Philippine Surfing Federation, and some of the local resort operators, the dream became a reality, and Osot Alcala became the first champion, earning him the title, “Barrel Master of Cloud 9.” It was in fact Osot who named the event the Cloud 9 Masters, his inspiration coming from the annual Pipeline Masters held each year at Hawaii’s Banzai Pipeline.

Other Cloud 9 Master’s champions include Piso Alcala, Carlito Nogalo, and Arkipo Figuron.
The Cloud 9 Masters has been run 5 more times since 2007, the last time in 2012, so after a two year hiatus the event is back thanks to Van’s Philippines, the Mayor of General Luna Jaime Rusillon, and several other local supporters/sponsors.
According to Vans Philippines CEO Wendell Cunanan,"Siargao is regarded as one of the top surfing destination in Asia for surfers including Vans’ very own pro surfer Dylan Graves, as well as Anthony Kiedes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to name a few.
The Vans Cloud 9 Masters will be a great event to showcase the skills of surfers including our Vans Philippines team riders from Siargao, who have already won early this year in Baler. We are very excited to partner with Mayor Jaime Rusillon and the City Of General Luna in presenting the Vans Cloud 9 Masters. We are looking forward to a very successful week of competition and a fun filled event and celebration, a great start to a great relationship."
Local event organizer Denis “Dencio” Dizon was a new arrival to Siargao in 2007 when he was invited to help out in the first event, and has been actively supporting the surfing community there every since.
“This year we are very fortunate to have Vans Philippines and the Asian Surfing Championships supporting this event,” said Dencio. “It is definitely the biggest Cloud 9 Masters to date, but we will ensure that we stick to the roots of where this event started, that the locals get to enjoy Cloud 9, and share their home break with friends from around the country and Asia, At the end of the day it won't be just about crowning the Cloud 9 Masters, or who is the best of the best at Cloud 9, it will also be about sharing the stoke with everyone, enjoying the surf and having fun.”
“We’re delighted to be coming to Cloud 9 again, especially to be involved in this Cloud 9 Masters event with all the local crew we meet each year,” said ASC GM Tim Hain. “Luckily Vans has invited us to sanction this very cool event, so the locals and any other ASC member surfers can get more points towards chasing their championship goals. Fortunately we’ll be staying on for the annual Siargao Women’s Cup that runs right after the Cloud 9 Masters, so we’re looking forward to lots of great waves and good times, thanks to Vans, Dencio, Mayor Rusillon, and all the local Siargao crew!” he added.
