Asian Surfing Championships adds Chennai, Indiato the 2015 tour

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 July, 2015 - Kuta, Bali - The Asian Surfing Championships is delighted to announce the addition of the 3rd Annual Covelong Point Classic Surf Contest in Chennai, India from 18-20 September to the 2015 ASC tour schedule.  The ASC Grade 2 event is sponsored by the TT Group and EarthSync, and will offer a total prize purse of $10,000 USD between the Men’s and Women’s Open Divisions plus valuable ASC championship points, offering the opportunity for Asia’s best pro surfers to experience competing in one of India’s most consistent mainland surf spots.

Now in its third year, the Covelong Point Classic Surf Contest is the creation of Mr. Arun Vasu and Mr. Yotam Agam, who following the success of the Covelong Point social project – an EarthSync documentary on the rise of surf culture in Covelong and the use of surfing as a catalyst for positive change in the tsunami afflicted South Indian village – teamed up with the Surfing Federation of India to create the Covelong Point Surf Festival.

The aim of the festival was to use surfing as a catalyst for the rehabilitation and community development of Covelong, and as a means to spread awareness of the issues faced by the seaside community.

So now after two successful years of holding national surfing championships for Indian surfers, it's become one of the best surfing events in the country due to the sheer quality of the surf, cash prizes, recognition and the positive vibe around the festival.

The Surfing Federation of India, with support from ASC judges, has played a key role in organizing the surfing contest and bringing the surfing fraternity together while introducing a structured format and international recognition to the event.

The TT Group’s Arun Vasu is excited about having the ASC come to sanction the event this year, saying, “Surfing has been rapidly growing here in India and especially the east coast, so after two successful events I felt that it was time to take the sport to the next level. And what better way than to bring in the ASC to the event!  Surfing in the next 5 years is going to explode into an industry on its own and also boost tourism in a big way, so we’re glad to be on the forefront and helping it grow.”

Covelong Point local Murthy Megavan has participated in ASC events before, in both Bali and in India, and is looking forward to having Asia’s top men and women surfers coming to his home break, saying, “ I am thrilled and excited that the ASC is coming to Covelong Point, as I am really looking forward to competing with the pros and improving my skills.”

The ASC’s Tim Hain is grateful for the opportunity to join the event and to bring the best surfers in Asia to a new location.  “I’m really looking forward to bringing our ASC surfers to Covelong this September, and being able to broaden their experience as pro surfers by taking them to a country where they have never competed before,” says Hain.

“After meeting some of the local Indian surfers earlier this year in Odisha, and having sent a couple of our ASC judges to the event for the past two years, I’m stoked to be able to make the announcement that we’re sanctioning the event this year.  Many thanks to Arun, Kishore, Murthy and all the others for their support and making it possible for the ASC to be part of the Covelong Point Classic in 2015,” he added.

The 3-day event will include not only the ASC sanctioned international surfing competition but also a national surf competition, live music, yoga, skateboarding, food and all kinds of other fun activities in this festival that will run from early morning to late in the night.

The Covelong Point Classic is sponsored by the TT Group and EarthSync with support from the Surf Federation of India and the Asian Surfing Championships.  More sponsor information will be available in the near future.
