Jialeshuei International Surfing Festival gets backing from ASC
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 September, 2015 - Kuta-Bali: The Asian Surfing Championships announces the sanctioning of the Jaileshuei International Surfing Festival sponsored by the Pingtung County Government in collaboration with Taiwan Ocean Recreation Sports Association (TORSA), which will be held on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th of October at Jialeshuei Beach in Pingtung Country, Southern Taiwan.
This new addition to the 2015 ASC tour schedule will see Asia’s best surfers joining the local Taiwanese surfers for three days of surfing and fun in the this beautiful tourist area of south Taiwan.
“I’m really looking forward to this event,” says ASC’s Tim Hain. For the last three years I’ve been coming here to the Kenting area in November, and we’ve been talking to TORSA about involving the ASC in an event here, so now it’s finally a reality and I can’t wait to introduce the ASC surfers to this area and the great waves, great food, and the great people here.”
Pingtung County is a subtropical area with an average air temperature of 29 degrees and water temperature of 25 degrees during October. The area is home to many reef, point, rivermouth and beach breaks facing every direction from the northeast to northwest, making it one of the most consistent wave areas in Taiwan. White sand beaches and palm trees with clean air make this a very attractive and convenient area to visit.
The event site of Jialeshuei has two main breaks that will be utilized; a left over a rock bottom called Goofy’s, and a rivermouth break over sand and rocks. Both breaks face east on the Pacific Ocean side, and during October the swells generated by the winter northeast monsoon winds and Pacific typhoons result in consistent surf and warm dry weather.
Contest Director Kuang Fu Chou is proud to be in charge of the event this year, saying, “I’m very stoked to be able to present the 2015 Jialeshuei International Surfing Festival, after a few years hiatus, thanks to the support of the Pingtung County Government and Mayor Men An Pan. Myself and the local surfers are looking forward to welcoming the ASC and its surfers, and being able to compete with them here in our area.”
“This event has always been only for the surfers of Taiwan in the past, but this year we are very excited at last to have the ASC and its surfers take part in a Grade 2 men and women’s short board contest. Everyone here in Jialeshuei and Southern Taiwan awaits the arrival of surfers from Indonesia, Philippines, Japan and other countries to join in our three day festival of surf, fun and good times,” he added.
The three day surfing festival will feature an ASC Grade 2 Men’s Open Division offering a prize purse of $5,000 USD and a Grade 2 Women’s Division with $3,000 USD up for grabs along with valuable ASC championship points, in addition to multiple local divisions in short and long board for men, women and juniors, with additional divisions for body boarding and SUP.
The surf break is located just 8 kilometers from the town of Kenting, a very popular tourist town, and the same distance from Hengchun, the local area main town. Various forms of nightlife are available in both towns with food experiences being high on the list of things to do. Transportation is easy with local bus, taxi and rental operations for cars, and motorbikes and the popular electric bikes are available for those with no international driving license.
For visiting international surfers and their families, the easiest way to get to Pingtung Country is via the Kaohsiung International airport, which is approximately 100 kilometers away from the Kenting area. Numerous forms of transportation are available, and we will be providing details about transportation and accommodation packages shortly.
The Jialeshuei International Surfing Festival 2015 is sponsored by the Pingtung County Government, Quiksilver Taiwan, Ocean Potion, Redbull, North Shore Surfing World, and the Kenting Surf Shop, organized by TORSA, and sanctioned by the Asian Surfing Championships.
The Asian Surfing Championships was established in 2010 as the progression of the highly successful Indonesian Surfing Championships that began in Bali, Indonesia in 2004. The mission of the ASC is to develop and progress the sport of surfing in Asia by assisting in the organizing and sanctioning of professional surfing events, which will help their growing surf communities and draw more attention to their areas for the progression of surfing locally, nationally, and throughout all of the Asian Region.
