TravelSIM Team Australia to defend ISA SUP and Paddleboard crown
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 November, 2012 : - - Ten-time world champion Jamie Mitchell returns to lead a strong TravelSIM Team Australia as it defends its title at next year’s International Surfing Association World Stand-Up (SUP) and Paddleboard Championship in Peru. The titles will be held in Miraflores from 24th February to 2nd March and will feature more than 20 countries and more than 100 competitors.
Divisions include SUP Surfing, a 2-5km SUP technical race, 20km SUP marathon, and 5km and 20km prone paddleboard races. The SUP technical race will follow the popular Battle of the Paddle format, which involves several laps of a course paddling in and back out through the surf. TravelSIM Team Australia dominated the inaugural ISA SUP and Paddleboard Championship in Peru earlier this year winning seven gold medals, plus the team gold, eight silver and one copper.
Several members of that all-conquering team will be returning for next year’s titles along with 10-time Molokai paddbleboard champion Mitchell, including Justin Holland, Shakira Westdorp, Angie Jackson, Brad Gaul and Jordan Mercer. New members include Australian SUP surfing champion Beau Nixon, Australian SUP paddling champion Kelly Margetts, and rising Queensland paddler Lincoln Dews, who will compete in the prone paddleboarding.
Mitchell said he was proud to be returning as team captain after the success earlier this year, but warned several other countries were preparing well to take on the Australians. “The team looks really strong again,” Mitchell said. “We have a few new faces in the team and a lot of our existing team from last year so that should make for a great blend of experience, youth and enthusiasm.
“I definitely think that all the countries will be looking to put forward their best team possible. I know Hawaii will compete as a team this year and they will have a super strong team. As always USA will have a great team and other countries like South Africa, France, Mexico and New Zealand will definitely be stronger than last year so it will be a very tough competition and we will have to be at our best to defend our title.”
