2014 Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival
Bilinga Beach, Gold Coast, Australia
29 - 31 August
Day two action sees contenders for the Titles emerge
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 August, 2014 - Queensland’s best Stand Up Paddleboard surfers hit the waves at Currumbin today for the second day’s competition of the three-day Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival.
The Gold Coast continued to offer up classic waves for surfers competing for a chance to represent Queensland at the forthcoming Australian SUP & Paddle Titles in October.
Tugun’s Shakira Westdorp is on a collision course with the Australian SUP Titles after taking out the Open Women’s division today ahead of Keale Dorris (Elanora, QLD), Dahl Kaylan (Burleigh Heads, QLD) and Allison Fullagar (Palm Beach, QLD) respectively.
Westdorp was the only woman to represent Australia at the recent International Surfing Association (ISA) World Games where she won a bronze medal and assisted Team Australia to an overall Gold.
Fellow Team Australia Member Jackson Close (Coolangatta, QLD) won the Open Men’s division and will be joining Westdorp at the forthcoming Australian SUP & Paddle Titles where they will both attempt to re-qualify for the Australian Team.
Close took to the tricky high-tide conditions with Gusto to beat a stacked field in Geoff Breen (Sunshine Beach, QLD), Lincoln Dews (Buderim, QLD) and Tim Cyprien (Helensvale, QLD).
A TV FEED will be available after 8am tomorrow with all the SUP Surfing action.
Eyes will turn to the blue-ribbon Open Ocean Marathon tomorrow for the final day of the 2014 Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival.
Competitors will line up at Rainbow Bay for race to Currumbin Creek in both 20km and 8km divisions.
The marathon caters for SUP, Prone and Ski craft and will see some of Queensland’s fittest and most elite athletes test themselves against the ocean.
Open Men: Jackson Close (Coolangatta, QLD)
Open Women: Shakira Westdorp (Tugun, QLD)
Over 40 Men: Peter Dorris (Elanora, QLD)
Over 50 Men: Pat Eastwood (Yeppoon, QLD)
The three-day Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival will provide the exclusive qualification pathway for Queensland athletes aiming to compete at the 2014 Australian SUP Titles, which will also take place on the Gold Coast later this year, and subsequently the 2015 International Surfing Association (ISA) Paddleboard and SUP World Championships.
