Giles & Nichols take Australian champs title in Rip Curl series

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 December, 2013 - Sunshine Coast, Queensland - Matraville’s Jackson Giles and Coolum’s Isabella Nichols are Australia’s 2013 Rip Curl GromSearch Champions. The Rip Curl GromSearch wrapped up today at Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Surf conditions improved for today’s final and clean 1.5m waves were served up for the remaining heats of this year’s series.

Isabella Nichols (Coolum, QLD) continued her recent blistering form in the 16 and Under Girls National Final to put together a combined-wave total of 14.17 (out of a possible 20 points). Alexandra Headland’s Sophie McCulloch was hot on Nichols’ heels throughout the bout, but ultimately placed a close second with 12.90 points, with Billie Melinz (Wollongong, NSW - 12.60), Laura Poncini (Moffat Beach – 11.83) and Holly Wawn (Avalon, NSW – 10.87) placing third to fifth respectively.

In the final of the 16 and Under boys, Jackson Giles (Matraville, NSW) ran white hot to claim the National Title with a combined-wave total of 14.37 over Joe Van-Dijk (Smiths Beach, VIC – 12.93), Jackson Baker (Merewether, NSW) and Maroubra’s Monty Tait who scored an unfortunate interference in the last minute of the final.

Giles and Nichols will now represent Australia in the International GromSearch Final scheduled for early 2014 at an undisclosed location.

Prior to today’s National Final, competitors in the 12 and Under and 14 and Under divisions surfed their finals, one particular standout was Jan Juc’s Xavier Huxtable who executed several critical manoeuvrers to win the 12 and Under Boys final.

Not only did the Sunshine Coast’s Reef Heazlewood take out the 14 and Under Boys final, but, in doing so, was also awarded the POSCA wave of the day after posting a whopping 9.17 in the bout.
