Surfersvillage Global Surf News
, 3 January, 2011 : - - Coolangatta -- Surfing Australia would like to congratulate the athletes selected into the 2011 TravelSIM Australian Junior Surfing Team. A 24-strong field of Australia’s top class junior surfers completed a testing three day selection camp at Surfing Australia’s High Performance Centre (HPC) before Christmas under the guidance of National Coaching Director Martin Dunn and High Performance Coaches Mark Richardson and Chelsea Hedges.

Surfer’s selected across the team’s three divisions (under 18 boys and girls and under 16 boys) included:

U/18 Boys
Creed McTaggart (Margaret River, WA)
Jake Sylvester (Bar Beach, NSW)
Cooper Chapman (North Narrabeen, NSW)
Connor O’Leary (Cronulla, NSW)

U/16 Boys
Kai Hing (Wurtulla, QLD)
Mitchell Parkinson (Tweed Heads, NSW)
Soli Bailey (Suffolk Park, NSW)

During the selection camp each athlete’s wave point averages, previous competition results, fitness, and overall approach were tested and analysed allowing point scores to be awarded to each surfer. Based on this point scoring system, the selections were made. “It was a very tough and close selection camp, with only the smallest of margins separating each surfer,” said Martin Dunn.

“The waves were very small for the duration of the camp but the surfers stayed focused and performed to their true potential.”

“Surfing Australia is very pleased with the attitude and skills displayed by the next generation of Australian surfers and are now confident that we have selected a strong team who will do Australia proud at the World Junior Championships.”

TravelSIM Team Australia will be heading to Peru to compete at the Quiksilver ISA World Surfing Championships from May 21 to 29, 2011. The team will be fighting to defend their current world title after winning Australia’s 5th consecutive.

Surfing Australia would like to recognize the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), TravelSIM and Suncorp for their continuing support of the Team Australia Program.
