2012 Australian Open of Surfing takes top honours at NSW Awards

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 December, 2012 : - - Surfing NSW is delighted to announce that the 2012 Australian Open of Surfing at Manly has taken out Event Of The Year at this year’s NSW Sports Federation Annual Sports Awards. The award ceremony, which took place at the Sofitel Wentworth Hotel in Sydney on Saturday night, saw some of New South Wales’ most prominent sports personalities vying for the prestigious awards.

“We’re absolutely ecstatic for surfing to be seen alongside such stellar events like the KFC T20 International cricket series and the APIA International tennis event,” said Surfing NSW CEO Mark Windon.

“The Australian Open of Surfing event not only showcased an incredible talent-pool in the ocean, but confirmed that surfing is firmly entrenched as a part of the fabric of Australian society, all while promoting Sydney to the rest of the world.”

Other winners included, Australian cricket player Michael Clarke for Athlete Of The Year and the Sydney Swans for Team Of The Year. The Australian Open of Surfing will be having a one-year hiatus in 2013, but organisers have confirmed the event will run again in February 2014.

Again, the competition will operate with significant logistical support from key event partners: Hurley, Billabong, the New South Wales Government, Manly Council, Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) and Surfing NSW.

Jason Haynes, General Manager for Hurley Australia told the ASP: "The Australian Open of Surfing was an incredible event in 2012. The event ticked all the boxes; great athletes, perfect weather, amazing crowds and a fun family vibe in a perfect setting at Manly Beach. Hurley is looking forward in continuing its support for another great event in 2014."

Mark Windon continued: "The Australian Open of Surfing in 2012 set a new bench mark for a professional surfing contest in Australia. We look forward to the event returning in 2014. Surfing NSW is in full support of the decision to ensure the benchmark set in 2012 continues into the future.”
