North Boomerang Beach names first order of champions

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 June, 2014 - The Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longboard Titles presented by HIF kicked off today in the Great Lakes region, with day one commencing in punchy two-to-three foot waves at the idyllic North Boomerang Beach. Some of NSW’s best longboarders tore into the playful peaks as they attempted to qualify for the upcoming Australian Surf Festival in Coffs Harbour in August.

Former event champion Daniel Bond (Blue Bay) claimed himself another NSW title when he nabbed victory across dual Over-65 Men finals. The Central Coast natural-footer linked together multiple righthanders, which allowed him to perform an eclectic mix of traditional manoeuvres. Lothar Fulder managed to claim the runner-up spot, while David Wilson took third.

Seven-time Australian Champion Richard Smith posted some of the highest scores of the morning, when he locked in 9.00 wave score (out of a possible ten points) in the first round of the Over-40 Mens. The Sawtell goofy-footer threw down a chain of lightening fast forehand wraps to notch up the score, which formed the majority of his 16.50 heat total (out of a possible 20 points).

Steve Mills (Byron Bay) and Jason Livingston (North Curl Curl) fought a tight battle over the course of the Over-40 Mens. Both surfers locked in a series of excellent scores, however Livingston was able to get the edge over Mills when he locked in 16.17 heat score.

Alan Atkins (Suffolk Park) blew away the judges in the Over-60 Mens division when he locked in an exceptional heat total of 17.17. Atkins left the rest of his opponents chasing a combination of scores to knock him from the top spot after he locked in 7.5 and 9.67 wave scores. As a result, Alan booked his spot straight into the quarterfinals.

Tomorrow's event is expected to kick off at 7.30am. All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order. The 2014 Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longboard Titles presented by HIF runs from the 18th - 21st June – just after the HIF NSW Surfmasters Titles presented by Moby's Beachside Retreat – and prior to the Australian Kneeboard Titles on June 22nd.

Due to the eclectic variety of waves in the Great Lakes area, the event is fully mobile and can be held anywhere between the Pacific Palms region and Tuncurry. Surfing NSW intends to mix up locations for the event depending on conditions and will seek the most appropriate waves for the discipline.

Event sponsor Australian Skin Cancer Clinics will be on site over the course of the event and will be offering competitors, families, staff and spectators free bulk-billed skin cancer checks.

The Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longboard Titles presented by HIF are proudly supported by HIF, Australian Skin Cancer Clinics, Be the Influence, Moby's Beachside Retreat, Great Lakes Council, Great Lakes Tourism, Coastalwatch Plus, Carve, Ohana Ocean Athletics and Surfing NSW.
