Australian University Championships: Surfers Full of Team Spirit

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 July, 2007 : - - The big guns of the university surfing circuit exploded onto the scene at Narrowneck, Main Beach, today as the first day of the Australian University Championship - Surfing commenced amongst small but clean conditions for competition.

The surfing event kicked off this morning with first-round heats causing university participants to become weary of their competitors prematurely whilst simultaneously maintaining focus on gaining the title of “Australian University Champions” for surfing, awarded to last year’s winners the University of Wollongong.

Contenders Mitch Longhurst and Michael Levitt, both of Griffith University and well known on the surfing circuit battled it out in the open short-board event, with Mitch prevailing as leader into the next round.  Assisted by the calm conditions, crystal blue water and 2 foot waves at Narrowneck was another explosive surfer Kane Dickson from SCU, who also triumphed in his heat.

The women also took advantage of the Gold Coast’s greatest asset as they carved up the waves in the short board and long board events.  Leading this morning’s heats were Michelle Richens of Monash University and Lisa Blackmore of Griffith University.

Sean McKeown, Australian University Championship – Surfing competition manager described the competitor’s enthusiasm, “very team driven. Some competitors mixed up their skill competing in their non – preferred discipline in order for their University to achieve maximum points. It provides a great atmosphere when all the competitors pull together as a team while competing in this University team format.”

With surfing an ever-popular sport for competitors and spectators alike, event organisers have been encouraging the public to take advantage of the showcase of talent on offer on the Gold Coast this week, hoping that the event will pull some big crowds. The surfing heats and finals will continue through to Wednesday and dependent on conditions, will be located on the Northern Gold Coast Beaches, Narrowneck or The Spit.
