GromSearch runs in challenging conditions at Coolum

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 December, 2013 -- The second day of the 2013 Rip Curl GromSearch, presented by POSCA was met with 2-3 foot waves with a blustery onshore breeze at Coolum on Queensland's Sunshine Coast today, creating fun and challenging waves for some of the nation’s best junior surfers.

The first heat of the day kicked off with an exciting exchange between 14 and Under boys, Jack Murray (Lennox Head, NSW), Toby Mossop (Nobby Beach, QLD), Tully Wylie (Jan Juc, VIC) and Lachlan Raffault (Tewantin, QLD).

Murray started slowly but came home strong to win the heat with some great fins-free turns on his final wave.

On the home front, Wurtulla’s Kai Hing made light work of this round two heat this morning and will progress into the next round of the blue-ribbon 16 and Under boys division after a display of scintillating form.

The 16 and Under girls division also put on an amazing display of surfing in the blustery conditions. Current Australian Junior Champion, Isabella Nichols (Coolum, QLD) opened the round with a win and was the stand out surfer in the division.

Nichols and Jaleesa Vincent (Coolum, QLD), utilised a home-break advantage to place first and second respectively to Phoebe King (Mudjimba, QLD) and Karla Thompson (St George’s Basin, NSW) in the bout.

Jackson Baker (Merewether, NSW) took out the POSCA wave of the day posting the highest scoring single wave of the event. His 9.67 (out of a possible 10 points) ride was a huge combination setup with two great wraps off the top into a massive a re-entry turn to catapult himself into a strong lead to win his heat in the 16 and Under division.

Our Aussie juniors showed exceptional sportsmanship. The atmosphere in the water was competitive while on the hill at Coolum was relaxed and fun with many of the guys scoring great gear from Rip Curl and POSCA with a load of giveaways on the beach throughout the day.

With the competition now in full swing, event organisers are excited to see the Rip Curl GromSearch continue to find Australia’s new champions, coupled with the daily POSCA Expression Session encouraging surfers to progress the sport with new and innovative moves that they wouldn’t normally attempt in a standard competition.

This year’s National Champion will be decided this Friday in Coolum and will follow in the footsteps of previous greats and gain an invitation to represent Australia at the International Rip Curl GromSearch finals, to be held early next year in an as yet undisclosed location.

The Rip Curl GromSearch, presented by POSCA will be held at the best waves available along the coastlines between Caloundra and Coolum.
