Great surf greets groms on final day of Rip Curl GromSearch

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 October, 2013 : - - Kalani Ball (Stanwell Park, NSW) and Billie Melinz (Coalcliff, NSW) have taken out the premier 16 & under divisions at Jan Juc for the Rip Curl GromSearch Presented by POSCA. In great 2-3ft waves at Jan Juc, all divisions were completed over the day with offshore winds prevailing throughout the day.

Kalani Ball was the standout on the final day, throwing a mixture of some incredible power surfing along with progressive moves, which allowed him to claim the top spot. Moving through the semi-finals, Ball hardly missed a step scoring excellent waves and proving that he deserved to win.

“I’m super stoked to get the win, all the competitors are really good and even with my two high scores I was still nervous. I know that all of them have the ability to get two excellent rides in five minutes.”

His highest scoring wave in the final was enough to not only help him take it out, but also claim the POSCA wave of the day. Ball dominated a right hand wave all the way to the beach with a series of hacks and cutbacks to earn a 9.27.

“I already had one good score but I was just hoping to get a back-up. It came through and was there by myself and I was just lucky that it walled up the whole way to the beach. I was so stoked to get that one.”

Placing in second was last year’s winner Jackson Baker (Merewether, NSW) who was able to score two good rides of a 7.33 and 7.13 but it was ultimately not enough to take down the rampaging Ball.

Victorian Joe Van Dijk (Phillip Island, VIC) placed in third after not being able to find a back-up to his 6.67. Monty Tait (Maroubra, NSW) placed in fourth.

In the 16 & Under Girls, Billie Melinz took down local Zoe Clarke (Jan Juc, VIC) and reigning champ Laura Poncini (Moffat Beach, QLD) in a tight final. Melinz also made the final of the 14 & Under girls and fourth.

“This is by far my most exiting win.  By the time I got to the 14 & under final I think I was just too tired, I just didn’t have any energy. I surfed about six heats today.

“It’s cold down here, but the waves are just so much fun. I can’t get enough of it. I love Bells and surfing everywhere around it.”

Only .53 of a point separated the top three with Melinz finishing on 10.83 (out of a possible 20), Clarke on 10.60 and Poncini on 10.30.  Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads, NSW) placed in fourth on 7.84 points.

The 14 & Under Boys saw Victorian Tully Wylie (Jan Juc, VIC) take the win over Ben Hucker (Long Jetty, NSW). Wylie’s strong backhand attack on the long walling rights proved successful, executing a series of backhand re-entries and carves to take the win.

Josh Camarere (Jan Juc, VIC) placed in third and was awarded the Shapers Fins Rising Star award for stepping up and making the final of the 14 & Under Boys. Darcy Crump (Avalon, NSW) placed in fourth after committing a paddling interference in the final minutes of the final.

Kobie Enright (Tweed, NSW) was in strong form in the 14 & Under Girls taking the win over ASL Rising Star award winner Kiani Dobbyn (Palm Beach, QLD), India Robinson (Jan Juc, VIC) and Billie Melinz.

New Zealand’s Tane Bowden took out the 12 & Under Boys at his new local beach. Bowden is moving permanently to Victoria with him family and today recorded his first win in Australia.

His result was enough to earn him the Firewire standout performance of the event. “The waves are so good down here. I am frothing to get the win in the 12 & under; it is my first win in Australia so I’m stoked. I’ve never ridden this type of Firewire board before so I’m super excited to have a go on it.”

Xavier Huxtable (Jan Juc, VIC) placed in second with Mikey McDonagh (Lennox Head, NSW) and Keanu Miller (Bulli, NSW) placing in third and fourth respectively. In another win for Victoria, Mt Eliza local Piper Harrison took the win in the 12 & Under Girls. Harrison took the win over local Jessie Van Neikerk (Jan Juc, VIC), Bohdi Leigh-Jones (Avalon, NSW) and Zahli Kelly (Wooloowin, QLD).

The 2013 Rip Curl GromSearch Series is presented by POSCA (Mitsubishi Pencil Australia) with managing partner Surfing Australia and associate partners FireWire Surfboards, Shapers FIns and ASL Magazine.
