Surfing Legend Wayne Bartholomew Joins Juniors At Wahu Surfer Groms Comps!

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 January, 2010 : - - Sunshine Coast -- The Bartholomew name is synonymous with surfing success and today Jaggar Bartholomew (Coolangatta) showed he could one day match the feats of his famous dad during an action packed day-one of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp.

Held in testing 0.5m waves at Maroochydore (Sunshine Coast, Qld), Jaggar dominated his opening round heat of the U/9 parent assist division as dad - Queensland surfing legend and 1978 world champion Wayne Bartholomew proudly looked on. “Surfing with your kids is what life is all about in Queensland…it’s a family sport,” said Wayne Bartholomew.

“My kids have been looking forward to the Wahu events for months, so to get out there and see them riding waves while having fun with all the other kids is a touching sight.... I was out there with Jaggar only offering some moral support…Jaggar prefers to paddle into waves himself so I just sat back and enjoyed seeing all the grommets ripping,” he said.

Also shining on day-one was another grommet from strong surfing stock – Luke Hynd (Surfers Paradise) who is the nephew of Derek Hynd. Hynd registered the days highest heat total of 19.57 (out of a possible 20), which included his two highest scoring rides of 9.57 and a perfect 10 point ride.

Tomorrow’s finals will see champions crowned in U/15 boys and girls, U/13 boys and girls, U/11 boys and girls, U/9 mixed parent assist and U/15 boys bodyboard divisions. Based on conditions, the event is mobile across the Sunshine Coast. Competitors and spectators are encouraged to call the Surfing Queensland Event Hotline on Ph# (07) 3030 6388 which will be updated each morning of competition.

The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps is proudly supported by Wahu, Surfing Queensland, Surfing Australia and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.
