Bede Durbidge advances at Jetty Surf Pro Junior Day 3

Jetty Surf Pro Junior

Day 3, Jan Juc Beach

11/01/2002

Conditions improve, Durbidge advances to next round

Finally , Australia´s very best young surfers scored some clean 1m waves to perform in on day three of the Jetty Surf Pro Junior.

The events number one seed and presently the highest rated pro junior in the world, Bede Durbridge showed his class by easily winning his opening round 3 heat.

Durbridge from Stadbroke Island Queensland and the event champion from last year has risen to be Australia´s number one pro junior following his win in last weekend Sydney event and at just 19 years of age certainly looks to have an exciting future ahead.

The powerful natural foot surfer scored high 7 and excellent 8 point rides to easily account for today´s opposition which included young West Australian surfer Ry Craike who finished fourth in the heat to be eliminated.

After the heat Durbridge expressed relief at the improved conditions --" It´s still small but the waves are clean and very workable -- way better than the last two days and I´m hoping it gets bigger and better for the weekends finals."

Other surfers to impress today included Sydney´s Kirk Flintoff, Queenslands Clint Kimmins and Newcastle´s Nick Coghlan.

The semi finals of the women´s were also completed today with Perth´s Claire Bevilaqua dominating her heat to win through to the final along with Queenslands Stacey Holt -- also from Stradbroke Island .

Victorian surfers generally had a disastrous day, their two top seeded surfers in Portland´s Adam Robertson and Nic Muscroft had great difficulties in finding the right waves and both were frustratingly eliminated. Just two Victorian remain in the event -- Local surfer Jack Perry and Phillip Islands Steve Noble.

Under 16 Cadet Cup surfers completed their semi finals today and the standout clash was between current world cadet champion Ben Dunn (NSW) and Sunshine Coast Qld surfer Wade Goodall -- Goodall won today´s encounter by just 0.5 of a point but Dunn finished second in the semi to also progress and the pair will meet in the final which is expected to take place tomorrow at Bells Beach.

The arrival of a midday cool southerly change stopped the event today however the change is expected to further increase the swell and organisers are optimistic that tomorrows and Sundays finals will take place in good waves at Bells Beach.

Jetty Surf Pro Junior - Day 2
Tiny waves made conditions very testing for Australasia´s best young surfers at Jan Juc beach today, however the young Cadet Cup division were still able to make the most of the barelyn 0.5m waves.

Leading the field was certainly Australia´s most exciting 16 year oldsurfer and current World Cadet surfing champion in Ben Dunn.

Dunn hails from the Taree region in northern NSW and he demonstrated his skills, being able to consistenly score excellent waves despite the apparent limited potential on such small waves.

According to Dunn -- "I don´t really enjoy those type of waves but let´s face it -- you have to be able to surf them in competitions - I practice in all wave sizes so I´m ready for it no matter what the conditions -- but let´s hope it gets bigger for the finals!"

Young Victorian surfers Daniel Laing (Phillip Island), Dane Carollo (Torquay) and Tom Law (Torquay) all progressed through to the semi finals of the Cadet division.

Current Australian Cadet champion Wade Goodall (Sunshine Coast Qld) was an impressive winner of his quarter final and will provide an intruiging clash with Dunn in the semi finals which will most likely take place tomorrow

Organisers are extremely optimistic that the swell will increase by the weekend for some solid waves at Bells Beach for the finals.

The Jetty Surf Pro junior is Australia´s premier pro junior event and has attracted over 160 of Australia and New Zealands very best aspiring professional surfers.

Highest rated Victorian surfers Adam Robertson (Portland) and Nic Muscroft (Torquay) will enter the event at the round three stage which will most likely be on Saturday morning at Bells Beach!
The finals of the Jetty Surf Pro Junior - men and women - take place at Bells Beach on Sunday around middday.
