Interstate and local surfers share the honors on day one at Jan Juc

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 September, 2007 : - - Over 120 of Australia's very best grommet surfers, 16 years and under, enthusiastically charged the fun 1m surf that greeted them for day one of the Rip Curl GromSearch at Jan Juc today.

In the classiest line up ever assembled for this event, the local Jan Juc surfers showed early that they were not about to be intimidated or blown away by the experienced interstate surfers who have traveled from Queensland and NSW to compete in the most prestigious grommet series in Australia.

The opening three heats of the day saw Jan Juc surfers dominate and win through to round three lead by top seed Todd Rosewell along with Adam Rawson and Elliot Man. All three used their local knowledge of the shifty left and right clean peaky waves to their advantage to take convincing wins.

Rosewell was particularly impressive posting two excellent scoring rides, an 8 and an 8.33 and said after his win – " I really want to win this one and qualify for the national final of the GromSearch and then hopefully win through to the international final….being at Jan Juc is definitely an advantage, we know the waves here really well and the water temp is comfortable for us, particularly after our cold winter and maybe the northern interstate surfers aren't so comfortable

It's a great field here though and whoever wins will need to be right at their top – Hopefully it's me." While the locals dominated early, the interstate invasion soon took control with the following 9 round one heats of the 16 Boys all won by NSW and Qld surfers!

Gold Coast brothers Thomas and James (Coolangatta) possibly looked the most dangerous. These two former South African surfers who moved to the Gold Coast just on two years ago have established themselves at the top of the pack of emerging young talents.

Both are stylish fast and powerful surfers but what gives them an even more dangerous edge is their willingness to take to the skies and perform aerial moves. They successfully pulled aerial moves today and won through easily.

"Aerial moves are my favourite and whenever I get the chance I'll go for a big air, start of the wave, end, whatever, I love them and they score bigger than anything else in our sport" commented Tom Woods after his convincing win. Thomas's large scoring aerials are well known in the grom events nationally and his nickname of Tiger Woods is built around a classy competitive act.

The cold waters of Victoria pose no problems to the Woods pair either – "We grew up and leant to surf in Cape Town which is either the same or maybe even colder than surfing here so we're used to it "said Thomas Woods who is confident he can go all the way.

The top scoring surfer of the day however was Newcastle 's Ryan Callinan who smashed his way to an outstanding 9.5 ride following a series of backhand top to bottom turn combinations – He backed it up with an excellent 8 point ride to easily defeat Sam Patterson who also advanced to round three in 2 nd place. Callinan's efforts saw him as the well deserved SNICKERS WAVE OF THE DAY winner.

Exciting Sydney surfer Laura Enever posted an easy opening round win in the 16 and under girls division today. Enever is the Australian Champion in this age division and she's also competing with major success on the 20 year and under Pro Junior circuit.

Fortunately for surfers placing 3rd and 4th in today's opening rounds they are not out of the event just yet. The GromSearch format encourages fun and participation and they all go into round two tomorrow and those who place 1 st and 2nd in round two rejoin today's advancing surfers in round three.

The 2007/2008 GromSearch Series is presented by SNICKERS and supported by media partners FUEL TV and WAVES magazine. The event continues tomorrow, Wednesday September 26th at Jan Juc Beach starting around 8:00am .
