Groms hit the water at HIS NSW Surfmasters Titles
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 June, 2015 - Boomerang Beach, Australia - The younger divisions of the 2015 HIF NSW Surfmasters Titles presented by Moby's Beachside Retreat got their campaigns underway in picturesque two-to-three foot peaks at South Boomerang Beach today.
Competitors in the Over-35 Men, Over-40 Men, Over-45 Men and Over-50 Men all fought a series of intensely competitive heats as they attempted to cement their position in the quarter and semi finals.
Shane Conwell (Whale Beach) was one of the standout performers in the Over-35 Men, hitting the little rights with a combination of power, precision and flow. The Northern Beaches natural-footer successfully linked together a large variety of frontside snaps and carves to score an 8.67 and an 8.17 to form a heat total of 16.84 (out of a possible 20 points). As a result, Conwell left 2014 event standout Jeremy Cohen (Macmasters Beach) chasing a combination of scores to take the top spot away.

Kurt Nyholm (Mollymook), Daniel Haggerty (North Entrance), Mitch Dawkings (Nelson Bay) and Colin Bernasconi (Forresters Beach) all shared one of the most exciting heats of the event thus far in the Over-35 Men, with all competitors gaining the heat lead at least once during the 20-minute affair.
However, when the final hooter sounded it was Nyholm who managed to take the win on the strength of a respectable 7.5 wave score (out of a possible ten points) in the dying minute, while Haggerty, Dawkings and Bernasconi all finished in second, third and fourth respectively; with less than 1.5 points separating all surfers.
Bill Harrison’s (Old Bar) consistent and powerful forehand attack proved to be an advantage in the first round of the Over-40 Men. With a series of punchy righthanders pulsing through the first stages of the heat, Harrison managed to post two mid-range eight point rides to lock in a heat total of 16.44. Consequently, Harrison booked his spot straight into the quarterfinals, bypassing the requalification rounds.
Scott Schindler made his intentions known in the Over-40 Men, throwing down one of the biggest turns of the event. As a result, Schindler locked in a 9.43 scoring wave, the highest individual wave score of the event.
Other Over-40 Men winners included: Glenn Pringle (Cronulla), Jake Spooner (Bulli), Paul Parkes (Merewether), Mathew Hurworth (Cabarita), Bryden Galbraith (Toowoon Bay) and Wayne Morrison (Port Macquarie).
Competition will commence each day at 7:30am with the call for the days schedule and location confirmed via the event hotline at 6:45am. The event hotline is 0458 247 212.
Divisions for the event include: Over-35 Men, Over-35 Women, Over-40 Men, Over-45 Men, Over-50 Men, Over-55 Men, Over-60 Men and Open Single Fin.
