Final event of series completed at Port Kembla Beach

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 February, 2013 : - - The final event of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp national series was condensed into a single day of competition at Port Kembla Beach. Regularly a two-day event, this final stop of the series experienced uncontestable conditions and dangerous surf on day one. As a result, Surfing NSW decided to condense the event into one jam-packed day of competition and beach games.

On day two, competitors were greeted with light offshore winds and fun three-foot waves. The day kicked off with the under-15 boys hitting the water. Cronulla’s Dion Earle started the show with a big forehand re-entry in a critical section that set the standard early.

Not long after, Nathan Martin, Billie Melinz, Rubie Reents and Tom Golsby-Smith all notched up scores in the excellent range throughout their respective divisions. The younger divisions: under-11 boys and girls, under-9 boys and girls and the under-7 mixed division, relocated down the beach to a smaller, softer reform bank.

All under-9 and under-7 competitors were equipped with parental assistance. The under-7 mixed final saw the next generation of young surfers in what seemed to be triple-overhead waves. Regular Wahu shredder Hugh Vaughan laid his rail down on a number of righthand peaks from out the back. He took out the division with Jack Macdonald finishing in second, Sockie Norris in third, Isaak Brown in fourth, Jada Thomas in fifth and Dayan Conti in sixth.

In the under-9 girls division, all surfers impressed the crowd with Keira Buckpitt taking the crown by tackling the waves with no hesitation. Gabi Spake, Sian Conti, Kiahni Scott finished in second, third and fourth.

The under-9 boys division saw a lot of grommets surfing well beyond their years. Winter Vincent surfed his way to victory in the final. The stylish natural-foot surfer linked together a series of manoeuvres to steal the win from Will Emanuele, Sabre Norris and Luke Buxton, who all finished second, third and fourth respectively.

The under-11 girls were a tight battle with Collaroy duo, Gabi Spake and Kiahni Scott taking first and second from local Summa Longbottom and Freshwater's Lilly Macdonald.

The under-11 boys took to the water and the five surfers had no trouble notching up 8 to 10 waves each throughout the 15-minute heat. Past Wahu event champion Finn Hill secured the win on his last lefthand wave where he executed three great backhand cutbacks. Tommy Golsby-Smith, Logan Steinwede, Beau Buckpitt and Lucas Bersot secured the second, third, fourth and fifth positions.

In the under-13 girls, it was an all local affair with Kiara Meredith from Barrack Heights taking the win from North Wollongong’s Summa Longbuttom. The under-13 boys division saw 28 surfers battling it out for the win. The aformentioned division was hotly contested with great scores and close heats all day.

Avoca’s Caleb Trancred impressed the judges right from his round one heat, up until the final where he took the win, with Keanu Miller in finishing in second, Max McGuigan in third and Jackson Roberts in forth. Billie Melinz from Coalcliff was impressive on her forehand and took the win in the under-15 girls. Rubie Reents, Paris Whittaker and Tahlia Burke all took home a finalist trophy for their surfing throughout the event.

It was a tight battle in the under-15 boys right from round one up until the final. Although not able to secure the win in the under-13 boys, Max Mcguigan successfully toppled Nathan Martin, Dion Earle and Jack Pacey to take top honours in the under-15 boys final.

Under-13 surfers and South Coast locals, Keanu Miller and Summa Longbottom will be flying up to the Surfing Australia Hurley High Performance Centre for an exclusive, all-expenses paid three-day Wahu Surf Camp. On the beach, spectators and competitors took part in Wahu beach games like Crumbed Cutlet and Cricket Catches. Winners of the beach games walked away with a truck load of prizes, all thanks to Wahu.
