Final Billabong Pro Junior Indonesia to decide 2008 Series Champion at Canggu/Bali

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 August, 2008 : - - Canggu, Bali -- Excellent surf at Canggu (phonetically pronounced – chung-gu), in Bali, is expected to set the scene for the final showdown which will decide this years Billabong Pro Junior Indonesia Series Champion. The event begins tomorrow, Wednesday August 13.

Coming into this third and final event, Australia’s Nick Vasicek (Coolangatta) leads the series on 3100 points ahead of local Balinese charger Ketut Yoga Semadhi (2540 points) and with this final event of the series offering double ratings points, numerous top ten rated surfers can take the title for 2008.

Vasicek’s consistency with a second and fourth placing in the opening two events sees him leading and the powerful goofy foot surfer would love to seal this season’s series with a win at Canggu.

After surfing the clean 1m waves at Canggu this morning Vasicek explained his situation saying “This is such a fantastic series with quality waves almost guaranteed at each event and to win the series here means a lot to all of us – Leading the ratings right now doesn’t mean that much, particuarly with double points at this event,  but if I can win this event then obviously I’ll win the series so that’s my mission.”

Ketut Yoga Semadhi created history last month at the previous event  by becoming Indonesia’s first ever surfer to win a prestigious Billabong Pro Junior Series event and he comes into Canggu full of confidence and very capable of taking out this years Series.

An added bonus for Ketut is the opportunity to finish the series as the highest placed Indonesian surfer who will be awarded a wild card into the Von Zipper ASP World Pro Junior Championship Trials which will run at North Narrabeen Beach in Sydney early January 2009.

While Vasicek and Semadhi  look the likely two to fight out the series ratings, their task at this event could be thwarted by what appears to be possibly the highest quality line up across all three events this season. Opening event winner at this years Billabong Pro Junior Series Indonesia,  Heath Joske (Nambucca Heads/Australia),  returns along with Tahitian sensation Tamaroa McComb.

McComb, just 16 years of age, has put together an amazing competitive record over the past 12 months with wins and high placings on the world stage that include an under 16 World title along with victories on the ASP Australasian Pro Junior circuit and impressive performances at high Open level at the Von Zipper trials in massive Teahupoo waves in Tahiti in April.

The world is watching McComb as he continues to add to his record and in high quality performance beach breaks at Canggu, expectations are that McComb will be very hard to beat here. Throw in the super talented Hawaiian’s in Granger Larson and Torrey Meister along with numerous other internationally rated surfers setting the scene for an incredible finale to this year’s quality rich Billabong Pro Junior Indonesia Series.

An additional fee has also been added for entry into this years Canggu event with Indonesian and International athletes alike needing to fill a "Billabong Bag 'O' Trash" for entry. This initiative aimed at cleaning up some of the rubbish accumulating on Bali beaches will see some of the worlds best juniors donning the gloves and grabbing a bag with the aim to inspire locals into some positive environmental action.

Support for this program has come with the the inclusion of the R.O.L.E Foundation who will oversee an environmental program aimed at actively engaging and educating local surfers in the importance of caring for our environment.

R.O.L.E Foundation's in Bali’ s mission statement is based around - Educate,re-skill and create alternate eco -friendly jobs and business opportunities, thus enabling the poor and disadvantaged of Bali to make a comfortable income, while reviving the health of the environment and taking the pressure off natural resources for future generations.

The Billabong Pro Junior Series is supported by Discovery Kartika Plaza, Hawaiian Tropic Suncare, Nixon, Kustom, and Von Zipper.
