Billabong's Junior Team gets deep training in Spain

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 June, 2013 : - - Some of Europe's best groms recently spent a week in camp in Spain, as part of the Junior Development program put in place by Billabong. Under the eye of Richard Marsh, Billabong Head of International Junior Development, the surfers' goals were to improve their surfing skills, develop a professional approach and catch as many waves as possible.
Despite some bad weather and difficult conditions, the group of 10-12 year olds that included Erwan Blouin, Dorian Gomez, Edoardo Papa, Gaizka Housset and Tiago Carrique surfed and trained each day, but also enjoyed the "Special Surf Camp" facilities.
Between the skate ramp, trampoline and Ping-Pong table sessions, Hodei Collazo also took time out from WQS schedule, spending two days with the surfers. One of Europe’s most succesful and experienced competitors, Hodei provided invaluable advice on what it takes to be professional surfer.
This camp is just one element of the Junior Development program that aim to provide a clear pathway for a future generation of surfing stars. The program includes Mini Groms (ages 10-14), the Pro junior tour (under 20s) and finishes with Next Gen program (ages 20-22) designed for surfers tackling the first years on the WQS tour.
The Mini Groms program includes other camps in locations around Europe as well as weekly surf training, video analysis, work on surfboards and nutrition.
Dorian Gomez, 11 from Biarritz: "I love going on a trip with the team ! I always learn a lot of new things with Richard and we're having a lot of fun with the other kids. But what I prefer is the small competitions we do together to show how much I improved since our last trip. Can't wait for the next one in July !"
Richard is now in Mexico to coach the Next Gen group composed of Jack Freestone, Ryan Callinan, Frederico Morais and Peterson Crisanto. After this trip the Junior Development program will be focusing on the European Pro junior team  as they tackle the summer run of 5 ASP Pro junior events in France, Spain and Canaries..
