Alex Ribeiro Wins the ASP 3-Star Event in Argentina
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 April, 2014 - Playa Grande, Mar del Plata Argentina - Brazil reigned supreme at the 2014 ASP 3-Star Rip Curl Pro Stamina held at Playa Grande in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Alex Ribeiro (BRA) took top honors as he defeated fellow countrymen Messias Felix (2nd place), Hizunome Bettero (3rd place) and Franklin Serpa (4th place) to conclude the opening competition of the 2014 ASP South America Series. With his victory, Ribeiro earned U$ 8,000 and 750 ASP Qualifying Series ranking points in addition to 2,000 ASP South America ranking points.
“I arrived at this event focused and enthusiastic,” explained Alex Ribeiro. “I was able to adapt well to the waves here at Playa Grande, especially the lefthander. I took a chance and threw some big airs and did some tweaked out turns.”
Ribeiro also commented on the predicament of facing an all-Brazilian Final. “I had a lot of tough heats today (Sunday). They were all against solid Brazilian surfers, but I stuck to my strategy and I felt super concentrated on winning the event. I’m stoked because this is my first ASP victory,” concluded Ribeiro.
The Brazilian athletes dominated the final day of competition at the Rip Curl Pro Stamina. They showed a blend of precise and modern day surfing throughout the event. Alex Ribeiro posted a 15.60 (out of 20 points) and currently leads the ASP South America circuit. Two time Brazilian national champion, Messias Felix (BRA) finished off strong by posting a 13.67 to conclude the event as runner-up. Hizunome Bettero (BRA) and Franklin Serpa (BRA) completed the group of finalists by scoring 12.90 and 8.77 respectively.
Victor Bernardo (BRA) eliminated the 2013 Rip Curl Pro Stamina event winner, Jihad Khodr (BRA) in the Quarterfinals. Dylan Lightfoot (ZAF) and Marco Giorgi (URY) were the only non-Brazilian surfers to make into the final day of action, but were no match for the Brazilian contingency.
The next event on the 2014 ASP South America Series calendar will be the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Powerade from May 20-25 in Saquarema, Brazil. Afterwards, competitors will face the perpetually challenging conditions of El Gringo for the ASP 3-Star Maui and Sons Arica World Star Tour in Chile from July 22-26. Competition will conclude with the second edition of the ASP 4-Star Mahalo Surf Eco Festival from September 9-14 in Itacare, Brazil.
