Medina's a native of the coastal town of Sao Sebastiao, Sao Paulo
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 January, 2015 - Gabriel Medina was honoured in his home state of Sao Paulo for winning the ASP World Title. Sao Paulo Governor Geraldo Alckmin and a large crowd paid tribute to Medina in a ceremony at the governor's official residence. Alckmin compared Medina to sport legends such as Formula One legend Ayrton Senna and swimmer Cesar Cielo.
"I'm happy for fulfilling one of my dreams," Medina told Brazilian press after receiving Sao Paulo state's medal for sporting merit. Medina joins other elite Brazilian athletes like swimmer Cesar Cielo, winner of a Gold medal in the 50-metre freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and three-time Formula One champion Ayrton Senna.
The governor added that Medina's feat will inspire other young people in Sao Paulo state to become athletes. Medina was accompanied by his mother, Simone and his stepfather Charles Rodrigues who travelled with him on tour last year.
Rodrigues showed the governor his new tattoo featuring an inscription of his stepson’s name and a drawing of the 2014 ASP World Tour trophy.
