Junior State Titles series completes Event 1
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 August, 2014 - A pulse in swell greeted Queensland’s best junior surfers today at Duranbah on the Gold Coast for day two of event one of the Queensland State Junior Titles. Glassy conditions were on offer for the first half of the day before a change in wind direction, which saw some testing onshore conditions for the finals in the afternoon.
A Sunshine Coast dominance plagued the Under 18 Girls Divisions with all four finalists hailing from the north. It was birthday girl Jaleesa Vincent (Coolum) however who managed to hold off Laura Poncini (Moffat Beach), Sophie McCulloch (Moffat Beach) and Vittoria Farmer (Noosa) respectively.

In a seesawing battle for first place it was come back kid Ethan Ewing (Point Lookout) who managed to carve out a win of his own in the Under 18 Boys Division. Ewing made the best of marginal waves putting together sharp and fast maneuvers to stop a rampaging Quinn Bruce (Coolangatta), Kai Hing (Wurtulla) and Reef Doig (Palm Beach).
Ewing suffered a horrific leg injury last year, which kept him out of the water for months, but is currently blazing a trail towards a Quiksilver Pro Trials Wildcard.
Both the Under 18 Boys and Girls Divisions have a wildcard up for grabs that will see the highest ranked surfer at series end compete against their heroes at the 2015 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) event.
Snapper Rocks’ Jagger Bartholomew continues to follow in his world champion father’s footsteps with a convincing win in the Under 14 Boys Division, setting the competitive bar increasingly higher in the hotly contested division.
Bartholomew will now head to the Sunshine Coast for the second of the two event Queensland State Junior Titles series, where he will continue his campaign for a State Title and chance to compete at the forthcoming Australian Junior Titles.
Surfing Queensland‘s State Titles Series is a key stepping stone in the developmental pathway for young competitive surfers. This year’s winners will be following in the footsteps of Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Bede Durbidge who are just a few of the high profile athletes who have previously competed in the Queensland State Junior Titles Series.
