Challenging, small surf for final day of Sunshine Coast event

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 December, 2014 - Competitors from both the 16 and under and 14 and under divisions didn’t let the challenge of shifting 1-2ft conditions stop them from performing at the highest of their ability for day four of the Rip Curl Grom Search Presented by Posca.

Quinn Bruce (Coolangatta, QLD) has finished 2014 firmly with a first place victory in today’s 16 and under boys final defeating Joe Van Dijk (Smiths Beach, WA), Tanaka Daiki (Japan) and Thomas Prout (Currimundi, QLD) respectively. Quinn capitalised on the strong northerly winds, piecing together a combination of aerial manoeuvres which was enough to set his scores higher than fellow finalalists.

Shortly after things wrapped up for the 16 and under girls semi final, Ren Hashimoto (Tugan, QLD), Alyssa Lock (Coolangatta, QLD), Kirra-Belle Olsson (Copacabana, NSW) and Laura Poncini (Moffat Beach, QLD) battled it out in the all the important 16 and under girls final which saw these top four surfers hold a piece of first place in the 20 minute heat. In the end it was Ren Hashimoto (Tugan, QLD) who was victorious over her rivals respectively.

With this win, Ren has now relegated herself into qualifying position for the Rip Curl Grom Search National final to be held at North Narrabeen early next year. Alyssa Lock, Kirra-Belle Olsson and Laura Poncini are just a few names that will accompany Ren in next year’s national final.

Towards the business end of day four, the 14 and under boys concluded their Rip Curl Grom Search campaigns in the final heat of the day. Showing consistency throughout the event, Mikey McDonagh (Lennox Head, NSW) overcome powerhouse surfers Hinata Aizawa (Currumbin, QLD), Dextar Muskens (Tweed Heads, NSW) and Luke Glover (Caloundra, QLD) in their respective positions.

Competition is set to resume tomorrow at Coolum beach with the 12 and under boys round three first out in the water closely followed by the 12 and under girls final. The Australian Rip Curl Grom Search series includes 5 events at key surfing locations around the country followed by a National final at Sydney's famous North Narrabeen.

This year the National Final has been expanded to a 3-day event allowing all divisions to surf it out for the National Title. Winners in the 16's division will go on to represent Australia against the rest of the world at the Grom Search International Final.

Current ASP World Tour surfers who have competed in the Rip Curl GromSearch finals include: Gabriel Medina (Brazil), Kolohe Andino (USA), Felipe Toledo (Brazil), Owen Wright (Australia), Jordy Smith (South Africa), Matt Wilkinson (Australia), Tyler Wright (Australia), Stephanie Gilmore (Australia). Malia Manuel (USA), Sally Fitzgibbons (Australia), Laura Enever (Australia) and Alana Blanchard (Hawaii).
