Oceanside delivers good surf for final event of season

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 June, 2014 - Surfing America Prime’s final event of the 2013/2014 season took place last weekend at Oceanside Harbor North Jetty.  The best under 18 year old surfers on the west coast were greeted by a surprisingly good combination of swells in the chest to head high plus range and fairly light winds most of the weekend plus beautiful sunny beach weather.

This was the last opportunity for these surfers to improve their ratings to earn a coveted spot in the Surfing America USA Championships at Lower Trestles, June 17 -21, and prestigious Surfing America Prime Season Champion Titles.

This was another sold out event.  USA Surf Team member Griffin Colapinto took the double wins in Boys U16 and Boys U18 and cinched the season champion titles in both divisions.  USA Surf Teammate Tia Blanco and Frankie Harrer were looking sharp. Tia took another win and the season Champion title in Girls U18, with Frankie in 2nd.

Both are heading to Cabo for the ASP 6 Star later this month.  USA Surf Team member Malia Osterkamp took another win in Girls U16, but couldn’t overcome the season point totals of Meah Collins, who took the Season Champion Title.

The level of surfing was amazing.  The Surfing America Prime series has definitely raised the bar on junior surfing in the USA.  ASP judges judging to ASP/ISA criteria, 4 person 20-minute heats, computer scoring and competing against the top kids from Surfing America member organizations NSSA and WSA in the west, has allowed the kids to raise their game and surf at a level never imagined at the Prime Series inception in September of 2008.

“When we ran the first Prime Event 6 years ago, our Head Judge felt the Boys U14 surfers weren’t ready to surf to ASP judging criteria.  Now these kids are going off.  We have 12 year olds doing full rotation airs on their first turn and using the rails like seasoned pros.  The future is bright for junior surfing in the USA!” Greg Cruse, Executive Director, Surfing America.
