Testing conditions on day one of CHIKO Pro Junior at Newcastle's Burton Toyota Surfest

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 March, 2011 : - - Small and clean conditions made for tough going on day one of the Association of Surfing Professionals CHIKO Pro Junior at Merewether beach. While wave size of less than one metre frustrated many competitors, for others it provided a perfect opportunity to demonstrate their ability to wait patiently for waves and relentlessly jockey-for-position.

Surfers struggled their way through 24 heats and completed the rounds of 112 and 96. Both the day’s heat and the individual wave scores provide telling indications of the conditions. Top individual wave score (7.25) was secured by Sean Mawson (Manyana, NSW) and 17-year-old Californian Taylor Thorne.

Thorne’s identical twin brother Jarad was bundled out of the competition in the same heat that Taylor won. Sean Mawson also topped the judge’s sheet with the day’s highest heat score (12.50). Mawson, 16, was not able to back up his first round effort and was eliminated in the day’s penultimate heat in the round of 96.

Local surfer Josh Radford (Lake Munmorah, NSW) squeezed through his heat with just a couple of minutes on the clock. The 17-year-old student from Lake Munmorah High was stoked with his win even though the waves were hard to find. “It was pretty average out there and you had to scratch around to find them,” he said.

Radford will surf again tomorrow in the round of 64 in heat 13 where he will meet another Lake Munmorah local, 2008 NSW schoolboy champion Jack Scollard. Other local surfers to hit the water tomorrow include Merewether duo Jake Sylvester (heat 3) and Ryan Callinan (heat 8). Action in the CHIKO Pro Junior gets underway again Friday at 7.30am.
