Shrinking waistline reason to reflect, celebrate...
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 January, 2011 : - - Geze Louise, has yet another year come and gone? It's true, time flies when you're havin' fun. I must have been having really a lot of fun too because 2010 flew by like the roadrunner getting chased by Wylie Coyote. And here we stand at the edge of the brave New Year. Standing tall, ready to go forth and survive in an ever-changing and extremely challenging world. As Bob Dylan so aptly put it, "the times they are a changin'." And lately he has never been so correct.
This is the column where I always list off all of my New Year's resolutions and goals for the coming year. But this year I wanna start off with a brief recap of some of the good things that have happened during this past one. I'm trying to forget the bad stuff, so no need to even touch on them here.
There were a lot of very positive things for me in 2010. I always list losing weight and getting in better shape as one of my priorities. Well in 2010 I actually did something about it. I started the year at 232 lbs. and wearing size 38 surf trunks. My back was killing me and for some months I had to revert back to riding longboards in able to surf. My back was so bad I couldn't get to my feet on my shorter ones.
A company named Synergy in Costa Mesa came to my rescue and with their help and guidance I am now 205, wearing size 34 and my back is way better. I am back riding mid size quads and fish and feel like I can actually surf again. Synergy is changing their name to Stark and moving to Irvine. They really saved my surfing and made my life much better.
Another big plus for me this year was hooking up with a Human Touch Massage Chair. With your help we named it the "Chairway to Heaven." The weight loss has enabled me to surf every day and the chair takes care of the aches and pains. I love my massage chair.
While I am giving shout outs, I would like to give a bit of praise to my pals at DeLillo Chevrolet in Huntington Beach for keeping my car on the road even though I trash it to bits on horrible dirt roads on my Mexico surf trips. Thanks dudes.
And I really want to praise all three of my kids for the great things they did this year. My oldest son Clint has been doing a great job with his surf school, Clint Carroll's Endless Barrels, and with his music and life in general. Kasey, my beautiful daughter, graduated from Orange County High School of the Arts with a 4.3 gpa and is at UCSB. Tanner Carroll, my youngest, continues to amaze me with making the right choices at the right time. He is wiser than his almost 14 years. Thanks to all three of you for being great kids.
Also thankful to Delaware North Co. for getting me involved in designing a concept for the possible Corky Carroll Surf Bar at the John Wayne Airport. The package comes up for vote by the O.C. Board of Supervisors Jan 11th. I worked hard on it so wish us luck.
O.K. looking forward. What do I want for the coming year? Obviously, I am going to keep working on the project to regain my boyish figure. Size 32 is within reach and a weight that starts with a one. I am not sure I can surf any more hours than I am right now, but I am going to try. I figure two more waves every session. After all these years I love to surf just as much now as I did when I started 56 years ago, maybe more. It is just pure joy to keep doing it.
I always say I am gonna try and be a better person, a better father and better husband to my amazing Raquel. The older we get the more patience we seem to have and the ability to not sweat the small things. That is on my list, not sweating the small things.
Every day that I am not in the Obits is icing on the cake and I appreciate just still being around. I guess a big goal for 2011 is to make it to 2012. Here goes.
