Small waves challenged groms at North Cronulla
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 October, 2013 : - - The final heats of the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by POSCA, wrapped up in challenging one-foot waves at North Cronulla today.
Over 150 competitors were culled to four winners by the end of competition today with the winners of the Under-14 Boys, Under-14 Girls, Under-12 Boys and Under-12 Girls crowned GromSearch champions.
Sandon Whittaker’s lightening fast backhand hooks proved to be a lethal weapon in the Under-14 Boys final. The Avoca goofy-footer threw down a solid combination of turns to net himself the a 12.50 heat total which propelled him ahead of Reef Heazelwood, Marlon Newling and Mitch Raymond who finished in second, third and fourth respectively.
“I’m so happy to have won that final,” said Whittaker. “My plan was to just wait patiently for a set that would run along the inside shelf. Everyone was really hungry for a set, but I just tried to ignore it and focus on catching on my own waves. My local, Avoca Point is really similar to the waves I surfed then, so it felt a little bit like home.”
Macy Callaghan made it two wins from two finals for Avoca when she nabbed the win in the final of the Under-14 Girls. The powerful natural-footer locked in an impressive 9.67 wave score in the final, which gave her an edge over her fellow competitors. Despite putting up a hard fought battle, Alyssa Lock fell marginally short of Callaghan and had to settle for the runner-up spot.
“I can’t believe I actually won,” said Callaghan. “There weren’t too many sets out there, so I was definitely happy to get two of them. There are Avoca Boardrider surfers in every one of today’s finals, so it’s a great feeling to win with them all here."
"My coach Glenn “Micro” Hall [ASP World Championship Tour competitor] talked me through a lot of it and told me to pick off the bigger waves, I’m over the moon it all paid off.”
Bulli’s Keanu Miller used his trademark power hacks to edge out his competition in the final of the Under-12 Boys. The talented natural-footer threw down an array of technically sound turns to notch up a heat total of 15.30.
Jan Juc’s Xavier Huxtable managed to lock in 9.73 score in the final, but failed to find a backup score and ultimately had to settle for second position. Caleb Tancred took third spot while Mikey McDonagh took fourth.
“Winning this is the best feeling ever,” said Miller. “I was lucky enough to scratch into a set as soon as they blew the first hooter and from there I had the whole heat to search for a backup score. After that I was just trying to be patient and wait for the best wave. All my mates and my trainer Matt Griggs gave me a lot of good advice as well and I think that definitely helped.”
Avalon’s Bodhi Leigh-Jones set the benchmark early in the Under-12 Girls locking in a solid 7.00 wave score followed by a 9.00. As a result, the Avalon natural-footer made things difficult for her fellow finalists, Kirra-Belle Olsson, Summa Longbottom and Madison Poole who finished in second, third and fourth respectively.
“I just wanted to get a first wave as quick as I could,” said Leigh-Jones. “This is one of my biggest wins and I’m just so happy.” Xavier Huxtable took out the POSCA Wave Of The Day for his aforementioned 9.73 ride.
On land, participants drew on a designated POSCA colouring wall and also customised their own Rip Curl caps. The Rip Curl GromSearch series presented by POSCA will hit Jan Juc for the next stop in the series.
