Interstate competitors shine in Rounds 1 and 2

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 May, 2014 - Bells Beach, Torquay - Interstate competitors have shined on Day 1 of the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles at Bells Beach which saw Rounds 1 and 2 of the Open and Masters divisions completed. All opening round heats were won by interstate competitors with Simon Knox (Sunshine Coast, QLD), Dale Richards (Gold Coast, QLD) Russell Molony (Central Coast, NSW) and Otis Carey (Sydney, NSW) all standouts.

His first time down at Bells Beach, Simon Knox impressed with some strong power surfing in the small but clean 2-3 ft swell nailing the highest wave score for the day, a 9.60 (out of a possible 10). “This is my first time down here and there are some fun waves. I’ve got a 4.3 wettie so I’m nice and toasty down here” said Knox. “I just decided to come down and hang out with the boys and get some waves. It’s been a great couple of days already.”

Otis Carey scored the highest heat total of the day in the final heat of Round 1, with a total of 17.50 (out of a possible 20). Carey scored the second highest wave of the day, a 9.33, including a series of massive carves and an air reverse. The Masters division saw both Round 1 and 2 completed with Ronnie Thomas (Wreck By, NSW) and Matthew Molony (Central Coast, NSW) both progressing through to the final. Former Pipe Champion, Robbie Page (Central Coast, NSW) was relegated to the 2nd chance round and will surf again tomorrow.
