Grommets light up the first day of the NRMA NSW Grommet Titles
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 July, 2015 - Maroubra Beach, Sydney - The NRMA NSW Grommet Titles kicked off in playful two-foot peaks at Maroubra today. Ethan Stocks (Korora) was unstoppable in the first round of the Under-14 Boys, locking in a massive heat total of 18.46 (out of a possible 20 points).
The powerful natural footer had his fellow competitors chasing a combination of scores to usurp him from the top tier position, which never eventuated in their favour. As a result, Stocks cemented his spot into the second round, bypassing the requalification rounds.
Other Under-14 Boys standouts included: Jamie Thomson (Narrabeen), Joel Vaughan (Bateau Bay), Joey Voyzey (Boat Harbour), Beau Buckpitt (Culburra), Lennox Chell (Avoca) and George Pittar (Manly), who all posted heat totals in excess of 13.00 points.
Sophia Fulton (Cabarita) stole the show in the Under-14 Girls, performing multiple critical manoeuvres within a tight space. Fulton took the win from Kasey Hargreaves (Stanwell Park) and Jasmine Riggs (Curl Curl) who both finished in second and third respectively.
Fresh off a stellar performance at the recent Skullcandy Oz Grom Open, Jai Glinderman (Narrabeen) continued to build on his heat winning momentum taking a win in the first round of the Under-12 Boys division. The Narrabeen surfer posted a heat total of 15.00 to earn his spot in the second round.
Not to be outdone, fellow Northern Beaches surfer Winter Vincent (Manly) managed to post a heat total of 15.40, which gave him an edge against his opponents in the round one heat. As a result, Winter booked his spot into round two.
The daily schedule will be confirmed via the event hotline at 6:45am each day. The event hotline is 0458 247 212.
The NRMA NSW Grommet Titles will be run concurrently with the Beachbreaks Festival, which will see a range of festival activations taking place over the course of Sunday, 26th July. Over 120 competitors will compete in the event, which will determine the NSW champions in the Under-14 and Under-12 divisions.
