King of the Point has successful first day
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 April, 2014 - Day one of the Kailis' King of the Point presented by the City of Stirling saw WA's best surfers compete at a crowded Trigg Point on ANZAC Day in small but highly contestable waves in the 1 - 2 feet range (0.5 - 1m).
The three day event boasts over $15k in cash and prizes with $5k going straight to the winner, as well as a spot into the trials of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour (WCT) Drug Aware Margaret River Pro in 2015 for both the men's and women's winner (King and Queen).
Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks was rapt with the turn out for day one.
"It was a great start for the comp with a real festival-style atmosphere down here.
"Despite the small conditions, the performance levels were really high and I'm excited to see all the action tomorrow."
Trigg locals did well in the opening round, with event favourite Luke Campbell (Trigg) scoring a 9 and perfect 10 to amass a heat total of 19 (out of a possible 20).
"It was a pretty glorious day at Trigg and was really cool to see the point set up with art activations and kids getting amongst it while the event was going on in the water.
"The conditions were good today and there were fun waves to be had, I was stoked to surf the point with only three guys out and was great to win my heat and go through to the next round."
Mitch Taylor was another local Round 1 winner.
"I had a fun little heat with a few of the local boys and can't wait for the rest of the contest."
Margaret River's Jerome Forrest was another to impress in his Round 1 heat and clearly had his eyes on the prize.
"I just wanted to go out there and have some fun and get some good scores, I've been surfing heaps lately, feeling really good and have some really good boards at the moment.
"Seeing Luke [Campbell] rip in his heat really fired me up, so I can't wait to take him on for the $5k."
Other Round 1 Open Men heat winners include: Jethro Hedstrom (Margaret River), Marc Lee (Trigg), Kael Walsh (Yallingup), Jack Teague (Margaret River) and Zac Ogram (Yallingup).
Round 1 Pro Junior heat winners: Nick Muntz (Trigg), Jake Edwards (Cottelsoe), Pascal Hutchinson (Trigg), Nalu Keala (Trigg) and Jed Mattinson (Margaret River).
Round 1 Masters winners: Jake Paterson (Yallingup), Kerry Whitford (Trigg), Damon Hayes (Trigg) and Mick Jardine (Trigg).
Tomorrow will commence at 7:40am with Round 1 of the Open Women, followed by Round 2 of the Open Men, Pro Junior Quarter Finals, Round 3 of the Open Men and Masters and Women's Semi-Finals.
Plenty of action has been happening out of the water as well with live music from international DJ Adam Bennetts, Star Surf ping pong tournaments, mechanical surfboard, daily Nova Cassanova giveaways, 3D Fins and POSCA design-a-fin competition, POSCA live art and heaps more.
