Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 May, 2007 : - - Jamaica’s final competitor remaining in the 2007 World Junior Surfing Championships, under 16 boy Shane Simmons was eliminated on day 5 of the championships in Costa Da Caparica Lisbon Portugal.

Shane was Jamaica’s most successful competitor this year having personal victories over Andrea Ragni of Italy, Jaime Pazmino of Ecuador, Facundo Arreyes of Argentina and Yuri Sadon of Israel. The other contestants were not as successful. Under 18 boy Jason Pusey had personal victories over Paolo Tuoni of Italy and Juan Layla of Spain. Ackeam Phillips, also under 18, had personal victories over Christian Bussotti of Italy and Juan Laya of Spain.

Under 18 boy Eneson Lightbourn and under 16 boy Lloyd Jacks were not as successful and were both beaten in the first round relegating them to the bottom of the heap in their respective divisions, while lone girls under 18 entrant Elim Beckford was able to advance through one round of repercharge in her division.

Based on these results, Jamaica now lies in 23rd place ahead of  Italy, Canada, Morroco, Mexico and Guatemala among the 28 nations present at the championships. As the games go on Jamaica is expected to move at least one or two places up the standings as other countries remaining athletes get eliminated and their final point totals are calculated.

“Last year in Brazil the 5 member team was able to hold onto 22nd place. The current 6 member team was charged with improving Jamaica’s world rank this year. By the end of the games we will see the final outcome. No matter what, we can be proud of the effort put out by our junior surfers this year.” said JSA President Billy Wilmot. The team returns to the island on Tuesday May 15.

The action continues tomorrow morning at 8:00am Portugal time or 2:00am Jamaica time and can be seen live on the Championships website. or paste in the link below into your browser.
