Day Four steps up the competition at Caraïbos Lacanau Pro

Lacanau Pro

All top seeds enter the show at Lacanau

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 August, 2017 - Day Four of competition unfolded in good three-to-four foot surf at the Caraïbos Lacanau Pro and ran a marathon 35 heats to set a great final weekend of competition in southwest France.

Things got serious halfway through the day when Round Four of the men’s event started, with all top seeds entering the show. In the very first heat, Jordan Lawler (AUS), 22, secured the day’s upset in eliminating the current highest European surfer on the Qualifying Series, Jorgann Couzinet (FRA). Lawler, coming off a good fifth place finish in England, continued to build momentum and posted a solid 14 points heat total when his opponents were struggling to reach the average mark.

“It was good fun, that left’s a lot like my home break at North Narrabeen so I felt really comfortable,” Lawler said. “I’m pretty relaxed and just looking to have fun, pick the right waves and so far it’s been working for me. This place is awesome, there are so many people at the beach and everyone’s really nice. It makes a huge difference when you’re feeling good and happy somewhere.”

One of the leaders in the French new generation of surfers coming up through the ranks, Timothee Bisso (GLP), 20, took a very similar approach to riding the long lefts breaking on the outgoing tide. Bisso’s forehand radical snaps earned him an excellent 8 point ride backed up with a 6.03 to advance into Round Four. In his third year on the qualifying series, Bisso sits around the 60th place and will try to climb a few spots during the very familiar European leg.

“I had a hard time finding my flow at first but I managed to get into it and scored well on my last two waves,” Bisso explained. “A full season is long and you’re not going to do well in every single event, but overall I’m satisfied with how I’m doing so far and I’ll try to build on that. I’m riding Superbrand boards right now that I got in California and they’re great.”

Gerroa surfer Dean Bowen (AUS), 26, kept the goofy foot domination run alive in Heat 10 with another solid 14+ heat total. The long time WSL competitor has been slowly making his way up the QS ladder and will count on the European leg to approach the all important Top 100.

“The waves were pretty punchy and fun and it felt like it suited me,” Bowen said. “I like coming here to Lacanau, the place is very alive and it’s always a party with plenty of friendly people. We haven’t had great waves this year on the QS and waves got really fun here today, and it looks like it’s only going to get better. I’ve had a tough season so far, it felt like I surfed well but I couldn’t keep a good rhythm throughout a whole contest so I’ll try to change that.”

Earlier in the day, the last three heats of the women’s Round Two were completed with the red and white jerseys claiming most top spots into the next round.

Competition will resume with a 7:30 a.m call Saturday for the men and 9:30 a.m for the women. Two rounds of both divisions are on the schedule to set up the finals on Sunday.
