ASP South America Pro Junior Series Intensifies | Portuguese
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 August, 2014 - Baía Formosa, Rio Grande do Norte - Waves in the 2-3 foot range (1 metre) were on hand at the right-hand pointbreak of Pontal, in Baia Formosa, Brazil for the conclusion of the 2014 ASP South America Red Nose Pro Junior. In the men’s under-21 division, Deivid Silva (BRA) was unstoppable on the final day of action as he defeated local favorite Italo Ferreira (BRA) by a score of 19.35 to 16.20.
"Italo is a tough opponent in any heat and he’s been awesome all contest long, so I knew that I had to do my best in the Final because he rips and he was surfing in front of his hometown crowd," stated Deivid Silva. "We’ve had several good heats against each other in Brazil and in other countries, so I’m stoked to have won such an incredible heat with the highest scores in my career. I’m coming off a pretty serious knee injury, so winning this contest is the best feeling ever."
For his efforts, Silva was rewarded with U$ 5,000 in prize money and 1000 ranking points for the top position on the ASP South America Men’s Pro Junior Series ranking. The final and decisive event for the ASP South America title will take place on the extensive waves in Chicama, Peru from September 16-20. Despite not being able to accomplish his goal of winning the Red Nose Pro Junior event in front of his local crowd, Italo Ferreira was still pleased with his result and has also guaranteed his participation at the conclusive event in Chicama.
"I would have loved to have won this event here at home, but it just didn’t happen," commented Ferreira. "Deivid (Silva) surfed incredibly all event long. I made a couple of mistakes during the Final and that made all the difference. My next step is to compete in a few QS events and I’m happy with my result here. The waves were great and they showed Pontal’s potential for holding major events here. I’ll definitely be going to the Pro Junior event in Peru so I can achieve my goal of qualifying for the ASP World Pro Junior event."
In the women’s division, Yanca Costa (BRA) took control of the Finals and defeated Larissa Santos (BRA) on the long right-handers by a score of 14.40 to 7.50 respectively. "It feels unbelievable that I won this event in Baia Formosa," exclaimed Yanca Costa. "Pontal is all about the rights, and I love surfing rights. I caught two good ones and I never thought that when I came over to compete in the Pro Junior I’d actually win the event! I surf against Larissa (Santos) all the time and we’re great friends. Now I’m going to give my all in Peru to try and become the South American champion."
Larissa Santos had been the standout performer throughout the event in the women’s competition but was unable to find high scoring waves in the Final. "Yanca (Costa) is a very humble person and definitely deserved the win. I wish her the best," said Larissa Santos. "I’m still happy with how I finished the event and that’s what competition is all about; sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. So I’m stoked with how everything turned out."
