Duane Desoto Wins Kicker Audio/Toes On The Nose Longboard Classic, Duke's OceanFest

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 August, 2011 : - - Honolulu - Reigning ASP world champion longboard surfing champion Duane Desoto moved one step closer to clinching a second world title today, taking first place in the Kicker Audio Presents Toes on the Nose Rabbit Kekai Longboard Classic at Waikiki. This event, rated by ASP Hawaii, is one of the feature competitions of the week-long 10th anniversary Duke's OceanFest, honoring legendary Hawaiian waterman Duke Kahanamoku.

Desoto, 34, has been a competitor since the tender age of four and has competed in all 10 years of OceanFest. Small, inconsistent waves at Queens Surf today meant that he had to employ all 30 years of competitive savvy and experience to outpace three seasoned rivals in the 30-minute final. Desoto won $2,000, followed by second placed Kamu Auwae (Makaha, HI; $900), Scotty Fong Jr. (Honolulu, $600); and Keegan Edwards (Honolulu; $500).

The Toes On The Nose Final began with a dynamic exchange between Desoto and Auwae that set the pace for the remainder of the heat. The pair caught every wave of high scoring potential that came through, leaving Fong and Edwards to battle it out for the lower spots.

"This is Uncle Rabbit's contest and its always a pleasure to be here supporting what Uncle Rabbit (Kekai) has done over his life," said Desoto. "He's a legend and a true pioneer of surfing. "This is Waikiki, where a lot of beautiful stories are made. Some of the most interesting characters in surfing come out of here, so it's an honor to be a part of that continuing history.

"We've got to perpetuate a legacy... Duke, Uncle Rabbit and the watermen who surround us here. There are so many legends who aren't written about here in Hawaii so it's great to be part of the pathway they set for us."

Also part of the day two OceanFest action was the Tandem Surfing Expression Session. Bear Woznick, organizer and leader of the Expression Session, spent hours on the sands of Kuhio Beach demonstrating tandem lifts and techniques before a throng of enthusiastic visitors and spectators. Following that, he and a handful of tandem teams took to the waves to show how it's done - Hawaiian style.

Tandem surfing was a favorite pastime of Duke, who frequently cut a stylish silhouette against the turquoise waves of Waikiki as he carried ladies - young and old - on thrilling aquatic rides across the gentle, rolling surf. Tandem surfing remains a true Waikiki spectacle to this day, and a memorable experience for all visitors to the Hawaiian Islands who witness it.
