Eastern Province claims victory at 2013 Vic Bay Quad in memory of John Pfaff

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 October, 2013 : - - The 2013 Vic Bay Quad in memory of John Pfaff, which was completed at Victoria Bay in onshore 4 foot conditions, was won by a motivated and determined Eastern Province surfing team.

Eastern Province surfers dominated the finals in all five divisions with 16 year old Matt McGillivray leading the charge with victory in the Open Men’s division. McGillivray’s stunning result was at the expense of local legend Sean Holmes. Top international surfer Matt Bromley (WP) came third while Michael Monk (Border), another classy young surfer, was fourth.

Eastern Province provided a total of seven finalists across the five divisions earned them 43340 points and a well deserved victory in South Africa’s second oldest interprovincial tournament.

Western Province posted 42,068 points to secure the runner up spot, hosts Southern Cape came third with 41,260 points, Boland scored 36,806 points and came fourth while 2012 champions Border were unable to field a full team and only scored 32,340 points for fifth place.

Tanika Hoffman of Western Province won the Women’s title ahead of fellow South African team member Faye Zoetmulder (EP). Britney Linder (EP) was third and Roxy Giles (Southern Cape) came fourth. The Over 30 title went the way of Tyrell Johnson (Border) with Clint Fraser (EP) taking second place ahead of third placed Barry Delport (Southern Cape). Stepha n Lindeque (WP) was fourth.

SA Masters team member Wayne Monk (Border) successfully defended his 2012 Over 40 division title beating Greg Smith (EP) into second place. Gareth Sepp (Border) was third and Steven Gadd (WP) came fourth. Defending Vic Bay Quad Over 50 Division champion Steven Hair(Southern Cape) repeated his 2012 performance beating Dave Fish (Border), Kurt Buchner (EP) and EP Team Manager Andre Venter respectively in the final.

The Vic Bay Quad is contested by the five Cape based provincial surfing associations. They are hosts Southern Cape, neighbours Boland and Western Province and Eastern Cape cousins Border and Eastern Province. Surfers competed in Men’s and Women’s Open plus Men’s Over 30, Over 40 and Over 50 Divisions and at the end of the contest all the surfer’s allocated scores are totalled to determine the team champions.

There is no prize money at stake and the champions take home a medal and a trophy.

The 2013 Vic Bay Quad was due to take place in mid August but was postponed when huge surf made it impossible to run the event. Despite starting in pouring rain on Friday the Vic Bay Quad was a success and a fitting tribute to John Pfaff, whose son David, presented the finalists with their trophies and medals.
