Double Shot Coffey Crown
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 July, 2011 : - - Running off a solid week of competition and a double crowning yesterday, the Under 18 and Under 16 Girls proved there is some outstanding talent amongst the female juniors, at the Hurley NSW Junior Surfing Titles Presented by Vestal.
Making it a family affair the Coffey sisters stamped their name on both the Under 18 and Under 16 Girls divisions, following their brothers fine form yesterday when Jackson took second place In the Under 16 Boys division.
With the swell dropping just before the finals, conditions were challenging but contestable and Ellie-Jean Coffey made the most of it, stamping her name the Under 18 Girls final with an opening 9 point ride and backing it up with a solid 7.75.
The double shot came when Holly-Sue Coffey rode an impressive 7 point ride right through to the beach completing three solid manoeuvers putting her competitors on the chase from the beginning. Holly Wawn (Newport) answered Coffeys solid ride with an equally impressive 7 point wave on one of the rare sets which pushed her through and into the lead.
With seven waves under her belt, the dying minutes brought a substantial set giving Coffey a 9 point ride, solidifying her 1st place position and crowning Coffey the Under 16 Girls NSW Junior champion. Its been a great event, our whole family comes along and we stay here for the week its such a great time away not only for the competition but to see all the girls we compete with, said Holly-Sue Coffey.
At these events we have the same state of mind, we rode the same board in the final swapping out in the water in between the heat, said Ellie-Jean who will join her sister on Team NSW and travel to the Australian Surf Festival in Port Macquarie next month.
Double was the word of the day with twins Audrey and Grace Styme-Lane in the Under 16 Girls Final, The Coffey sisters taking two crowns home for the mantle and Byron Bay Under 12 ripper Kyuss King scoring not one but two perfect 10s. I felt pretty confident after the first ten and thought yes I want to do this again, the first one I did a few snaps and a cutty and an end section turn, so I had to top that.
I did three huge turns and a floater and thought yeah I got another one, Ive never done it before I feel really really good, Im stoked I want to do it all again, said a super excited King who made history this week soring two perfect tens in the Under 12 Boys division.
Sydney surfers Jack Pacey, Harley Ross-Webster (Northern Beaches), Nathan Martin (Cronulla) and Lenox Head ripper Zac Wightman demonstrated some outstanding surfing in the Under 14 Boys division and will move through to tomorrows semis for the final day of competition.
