2015 Innovation of the Year Award goes to Wavegarden
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 October, 2015 - EuroSIMA’s Surf Summit annual conference dedicated to the Action Sports industry took place on October 8th and 9th in Seignosse, with over 250 professionals of the industry who attended two days of seminars, debates and conferences around the theme of “inspiration”.
Once again, the conference organizers had selected high quality panelists for their expertise and ability to inspire companies to help them innovate and even reinvent themselves. “I was highly satisfied with this year’s Surf Summit, which over the years has become THE action sports event for professionals. For this 14th edition, I could feel the genuine positive energy from all players in our industry who seem to have found a new desire to share, work together, open up and explore new horizons” says Frédéric Basse, EuroSIMA President.
Alongside the conferences, the event also hosted the “Surfing Lounge”, an exhibit of the most creative and innovative products made by Action Sports brands. For the second edition of this exhibit, around fifty brands presented over a hundred products. “The Surfing Lounge showcases the talent, creativity and expertise in our industry and proves that our brands are constantly innovating. It is a real added value and we are proud to be able to convey our passion and values through such innovative products” adds Frédéric Basse.

The Waterman’s Ball was, as always, the perfect way to close the 2 days of work with a fun and festive event and this year focused on “Hot Rod” as a theme. 350 guests attended the event with a “total denim look” as dress code. The event also included the annual EuroSIMA Surf Industry Awards, which recognizes European athletes and Innovation of the year.
20 innovations were in the running for the Innovation of the Year Award, awarded by a jury of experts. The names of the top three innovations were announced during the Waterman’s Ball: the young Biarritz-based company Lastage for its commitment to the environment and its all new innovative system to close boardshorts. Then came the ecoresponsible R2 Yulex wetsuit by Patagonia and finally the new generation Wavegarden technology for artificial waves by the Spanish-company Wavegarden SL.
Out of these top three, the 2015 Innovation of the Year Award went to Wavegarden. To generate the Wavegarden swell, a mass of water is moved across a surface, which generates a wave with a size and speed that can be controlled and adapted to various surfer levels. This technology enabled the construction of a first artificial wave pool in Wales, while a second is currently underway in Texas. “Waves have always been our passion, and now we can share them with anyone, anywhere” declared Josema and Fernando Odriozola, the designers.

Surfers Johanne Defay and Benjamin Sanchis respectively received the European Female and Male European Athlete of the Year Awards for their performance and influence on the European surfing scene as well as for their visibility in international boardsports media. These awards were determined thanks to the Ride O’Meter tool, which analyses athlete presence and visibility across specialized media (print and online), social networks and online platforms.
It was therefore a week full of encounters, debates and festivities, all in the purest tradition of board sports culture.
