Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 June, 2013 : - - Bulla from Fiji, The 2013 Volcom Fiji Pro got underway today in clean and pristine 4'-6' conditions at Cloudbreak. The swell forecast had been for a long period swell of 19 seconds but just how good it was caught a few people by surprise, especially the world champ Joel Parkinson who'd gone fishing overnight thinking the comp wouldn't run, and Kelly Slater who still hadn't arrived in Fiji from the US mainland.
Parko couldn't have got back in time even if he wanted because the boat he was on had run aground on a coral reef early in the morning and they had to wait till high tide, which was early in the afternoon, to get the boat re-floated. While the defending event champion and the current world champion were missing the rest of the Top 34 reveled in the perfect conditions. No wind, sheet glass ocean and barreling waves, a surfers dream.

I'm loading up images from today as I type and will continue to add to this Gallery as the comp continues. The swell forecast is looking very good for later in the week so stand by for more action in the coming days. There are a few dark horses in this event. Tour rookie Nat Young has been free surfing Cloudbreak and Restaurants very well and even though Gabriel Medina lost today he's been dominating the line up, in fact don't right off any of the goofy footers in the Top 34 because they are all having fun out there.
